Have you ever come across a book that you were so psyched about reading but then you read about ten pages in and it turns out to be the hardest book ever?

For me it was either To Kill a Mockingbird or The Silmarillion.

To Kill a Mockingbird would have been fun to read if it wasn't for a class assignment. I think that's what killed it for me.

The Silmarillion I Still have not been able to finish. I've been told it's impossible to read cover to cover. I read the first chapter and I'm like 'What the hell did I just read?'

I find books where you can pick what happens in it hard, I mean it's not a very good book if it make you pick what happens. Know what I mean?

Well, it's not impossible, as I read it when I was 13. O.O

I'd have to say Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter... that man goes SO OVERBOARD with his detail that it's not even funny. I all but cried through the 50-page introduction from sheer boredom. His first chapter is the description of a door. I'm not joking. >.<

To Kill a Mockingbird.

I checked it out in 6th grade and tried reading it...

I heard it was good, but you can't keep a 6th grader occupied for long with a story like that...

Dude really? how many chapters are there in that book 1000? if it was just a door i'd me find with just the colour and what it's made of and any small patten it may have on it, but man a whole chapter on a door

A word of advice: dont ever read A Tale of Two Cities. When they say he got paid by the word, they're not kidding. And i read the first five pages and went, "wtf did i just read?" That book is hard as heck! I have The Silmarillion and it's hard, too. I like To Kill a Mockingbird--you have to really want to read it, though and give it chance.

Mine are The Hobbit, Silas Marner, and Romeo and Juliet.

The only thing that got me through the Hobbit, was the fact I had to read it for english class.

Silas Marner, it has 18-19th century English in it, and it was very boring. I never finished it even though I had to read it for class.

Romeo and Juliet was good, but I only understood it because of translations, and my teacher had us watch the older version of the movie.

gah...I'm reading that right now for class. It makes more sense around chap 4. xD But it gets confusing after a while. My teacher said to keep reading and it should make sense after 100 pages. O_O

Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings were both quite hard but Silmarillion was the worst one.
I have a pocket-version of it in norwegian (my first language) and it took me 3 months to read, at the same time I got Harry Potter adn the order of Phoenix in english and that one took me 3 days:p
The worst part about Silmarillion for me was that the characters have so many different names! It's impossible to keep track of them all!

I am actually a little embrassed by saying this, but I had problems reading a childrens book >.> It's a long time ago , but I still remember it *blushes*.

I opened the book and started to read and I was like wtf?! this is a childrens book O.O The word were friggin hard the language was really bad, and the worst part is that the book was supposed to be about the feelings of a dog. A dog! a 30 pages book! jeez some people can't write books.

Yeah, long time ago. And I am actually a good reader, not to be bragging or anything at all.
I find the book lame, and I have said this before but it was a long time ago!.

Umm... it's in a really small typeface, so... damn, now I must go upstairs and check...

Right, 254 pages, which is nothing, you think? Well, the typeface is tiny. And yes, the first chapter was two pages long, speaking of the prison door. >.< Oh, and a rosebush beside the door. It's supposed to be this whole symbolism thing, but then there's me... *strangles symbolism*

for me it has to be Silmarillion. i tried, then gave up and left it a few years. came back and managed to finish it after about 3 months. i kept being reminded of the bible with the constant "Bob, son of Jim, second cousin of Frank...."etc etc.
theres also canterbury tales STILL IN YE OLDE ENGLISH!! found it at the side of my english room, tried to read the first page and nearly passed out from the effort.
in comparison, i pre-ordered half blood prince, got it on saturday morning and had it read by sunday evening :D. but yeah, Silmarillion had to be the most difficult book in modern english to read.

I love to read and most books I can read no problem...except for one >_< I started it like 5 years ago but I find it so boring I can't bring myself to finish it! Hehehehe Huckleberry Fin :( I was told it was really good but it just makes me sleepy, I am determined to finish it one day though! :D

Other than that The Return Of The King was kinda hard going and also The Half Blood Prince, jeez that book did my head in! :( it was easy to read but so irritating! For crying out loud I get the cave is green! *breathes* lol rant erm over!

Shakespeare and a lot of older books are really good! The Tempest is brilliant! Oh and Othello, Hamlet is good too :D

I am going to say frankenstein, that book was really hard to keep focus in. It is one of the best book I ever read but the way she wrote it was really drawn out, and parts of it were just confusing to read. I could often feel myself not reading but scanning the pages.

Here here. I didn't enjoy Frankenstein cause of the long drawn out chapters. xP

A hard one that I'm reading is Tale of two cites. I had absolutely no idea what the heck they were talking about in the first paragraph.

I absolutely adored the Silmarillion!! But I had to constantly look back at the index of names to figure out who those people were. It was annoying, but worth it in the end.

I thought the LOTR series was really hard to keep track of. Everything went in and out of different situations way too many times to keep up with.

The hardest book to read, in my opinion, was Beowulf. Talk about confusing.

Pride and Prejudice. I tried to read three times and couldn't get pass the 1st chapter. I kept getting lost in the conversions. I didn't know who was talking when and who they were talking about.

Oliver was like trying to run in ankle deep sludge. I got half way through the book and hit a lull. ****ens just wouldn't move the story along. and it's funny because A Christmas Carol is my favorite book. maybe because it's so short.

However I have no problems reading Shakespeare. I guess it's because I'm a thespian.

Hmm...I used to find Little Women hard to get through, but I guess that was because I was so little when I first picked it up.

Of the books I have read recently, I found Dracula to be the most annoying. Sure it's short, but the print is tiny and you have to read every word carefully to understand what the heck is going on...It takes a lot of time to get through...not to mention that it's terribly dull and oh-so corny.

Garlic. Stakes. Crosses. Oh my....and gravedirt. Lots of gravedirt.

That book was difficult to read, but if you took it slowly and word by word it wasnt too bad.

And I actually found Pride and Prejudice to be amazing (but that could be because i saw the movie first and fell in love with it).

As for the hardest book I have ever read... well, it wasnt the hardest, but Metamorphosis was difficuly. I was not in the mood to read it and so i just stopped early on, asked myself what the h*ll I had just read, and have not looked at the book since. I keep meaning to go back and try again....

We had to read "Great Expectations" and "As I Lay Dying" for English class last year.

Both were extremely hard to read. "Great Expecations" used too much old English language, and "As I Lay Dying" changed POV too much.

Into the Wild It was sooo boring! It was about the author going around finding information about a guy who was from a rich family and decided to go into Alaska in the middle of winter without the neccecities and ended up dying in a deserted bus. I just thought the guy was stupid and then somewhere in the middle of the book, the author starts talking about people who did some of the same things and died. The only reason I even picked it up was because it was for school.

To Kill a Mockingbird.

I really need to read that book. I began reading it at the age of six or seven (and, amazingly, understood what was going on) and was beginning to enjoy it. Then my teacher told me to stop reading it because I was too little. That really, really discouraged me, and I still hold a grudge. Dang teacher. I think I'll read it at some point this year.

The Silmarillion had me confused from the first page, admittedly

I've never got the problem with Shakespeare. It's pretty simple to understand.

And there's a Doctor Who story I just can't read, it bores me to death! I was a quater of the way in and nothing had happened! So I gave up on it...

I didn't find the LOTR books really hard to read, although I had to read one paragraph like 4 times to understand it, :lol3:. But that was most because I was at my aunt’s house at the time and that family is crazy!

However I'm finding The Children of Húrin by J.R.R. Tolkien near impossible to read! It's just so... depressing and... dull. Not to mention super confusing .

Pride and Prejudice was a bummer to read as well. The school librarian gave it me to read since she said I was reading too many Fantasy books for a girl at the time and thought that most of the girly books would be too easy for me (not true but more on that later). It was really confusing  and I had no idea what was happening at all! However I recently saw the movie and really enjoyed it so I may try reading the book again...

I know this is supposed to be a good book but I couldn't read Eragon! I don't know why, but I just keep falling asleep while reading it! :sleepy: It was kinda boring,.

The teen-girl romance kinda books are also usually difficult for me to read but that's because I get so mad at them! The characters are so dim and only care about being popular and make-up and boys and I feel like chucking the book at the wall! :ranting:

The Catcher in the Rye. It's a classic, but it's so repetitive, it gets very boring VERY quickly.
I haven't found a plot yet, and I've read the book once and skimmed through it twice.

A Separate Peace was also another "where the hell is the plot" book, but on a different level than Catcher.
Call me sadistic, but I really like classic depressing books and Shakespeare.
"Et tu, Brute?"

The Aneid was also good, but I tried reading it in the original Latin prose form, and I couldn't translate half of it. But the English story form was excellent. A little hard to follow if you don't know a lot about Roman mythology and Latin. s

For me, I think my books to read:

Dragons of a Fallen Sun: I bought it a couple weeks ago, since I absolutely love the Dragon Lance series, but every time I go to read this book, I get a couple pages done and then ignore it for a while. I think most of my problem is that there are so many things mentioned in the War of Souls trilogy that I just don't understand because I think I missed the series with the Chaos Wars. It's a bit hard to follow. =S

Of Mice and Men: Had to read that book when I was a sophomore in high school and I still hate it. It was just too boring to read and I'll never understand how the bloody hell Steinbeck managed to become such a reknowned author.

I have to read those two for honors this summer. I finished Catcher and I agree with you; there is no plot whatsoever.

I've only just started A Separate Peace and I really don't think it has a plot. After reading what you said, I'm guessing there won't be a plot ;_;

I find Shakespeare a tad bit difficult. I really enjoy reading it though ^^'. Apart from that, I haven't found any difficult books.

For me, I would have to say the Screwtape letters. i got in about 5 pages and had to go back and read that part over again.

My book in eighth grade was "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood".... all that old English and weird Grammer really raveled my brain. *_* I forced myself to read up to page twelve and then I threw down the book and said, "'Tis enough!!! GAH!!!!!"
I only attempted to read it because it gave good AR reading points... lol

The Hobbit is mine. It's a great book, but the chapters feel like the go on forever. And then there's The Secret of the Andes. It's a short book, but it was so boring, especially because I had to read it for a school assignment.
