So I don't know how this really affects the rest of the country but I live on the California-Mexico border, so it is all around me. I want to know your guys' opinion on the subject whether it affects you or not.
Me personally, don't agree with the idea of illegal immigration, I have a family that came to america 100% legal and I am against just coming in, when I my family worked really hard to get in. But what I do support is the idea of making work permits much easier to get and I encourage more mexicans to obatian them legally. Currently they are much harder to get and immigrates are voiding the process and just coming in for work under the table and sending money back home. If work visas are made easier to get there would be less problems such as these, not to mention that they come and work for around 3 to 6 months then go back home for a month or two and return.
Not to mention that the families that come up to SoCal. then do not try to learn, customs or language also upsets me.
But what are your guys' opinions on it.

To be honest it really annoy's me. I know that's harsh but it does. I can understand that some people need to immigrate perhaps because their life is in danger back in their country, but some of them don't really need to. They come in expecting their lives to change just like that & that the Govt. will give them housing & benefits. Also when they are put on trial, whether they get to stay in the country or not can take ages to complete. A lot of these benefits can go to people who desperately need it.

Exactly, I feel like, all the hard work I put out everyday at work, is being sucked up by families who will use the ER for a flu, or suck down social security. People who come to america in search of a better life want it to be handed to them on a silver platter and its not like that, but they find out it is not what is imagined and they sit and suck up social security. Or take lower paying jobs from kids, such as working in a fast food joint or somthing like that.

It's stupid and unfair. They should do everything like everyone else has to, not get a free ride. Gawd!! Do they think they're better then us or something?? *sigh* Whatever...SOMETHING will have to stop it, soon....I'm sure of it...
Jeez..."free ride". You're all quite mistaken. First of all, it's not only Mexicans that are illegal immagrants. It happanes litterally all over this country.
In the east, it's islanders and europeans.
In the south it's Latinos.
In the North it's Canadians.
In the west it's Latinoes and Asians.
Secondly, no illegal immagrant gets into this country for free. Their lives in thse countries are obviously so hard, so stressful and poor, that they feel a need to get over to this country. When they can't afford to come here legally, they face their only option, illegally. And then, once they get here, they work overtime for small wages, they go back to crowded american apartments that they can barely pay for, they have to constantly keep under wraps, not going to hospitals or any sort of governmental facility, for fear of being caught and sent back to their country. Not to mention they don't have things like insurance or mortgages. They can't even drive legally. There lives are harder then any of ours. They may be taking our jobs from hard-working americans, but it's not their fault, it's what they had to do to survive. We all need to stop blaming the immagrants, and start blaming the cheap businessmen who will hire them. These men could easily pay the immagrants normal wages, so that there would be some degree of fairness, perhaps the immagrants could even afford to get legalized, but the businessmen don't, because they can hire immagrants for cheap. They can get quality work for practically nothing. They don't need to pay normal wages to the immagrants, because only american citizens need to be paid minimum wage. Everyone gets jipped, not just the immagrants. So stop running around saying it's unfair and crap, because it's not their fault, it's our own greediness that attracts these people and takes away from our own lives and salaries.

I live in Michigan, so it's most likely not nearly as large of an issue here as it would be where you live. I'm not going to act like I know what it's like to live in the conditions of the presented countries and the reasons they illegally immigrate over here-Since I haven't had the slightest touch with it.
But, when we refer to the part where tax dollars are being spent on welfare and foodstamps for these people I can relate. I've never been for government generosity-churches, welfare, etc. Regardless of what it is I don't like it, since it's extremely unfair to the whole of the country doing their civil duty. Some of these people can't find jobs. Then again, a lot of them are useless junkies, alcoholics, or gamblers, who don't go to anonymous meetings [NA, AA, GA etc.]
A lot of immigrants do find jobs over, but there's a few of them who come for the benefits. Still, for the most part a lot of you have this mistaken, most of them who come over do work. It's not like they just marinate here. And the job issue-a lot of these jobs are careers that many Americans wouldn't even take.

For once, I agree with Cin.
It's a natural instinct to survive and to survive as comfortably as possible. These people, (we'll use the mexicans as an example) have such horrid lives that they basically HAVE to leave their country, or die. In Mexico the conditions are so poor that you'll have entire families going without food for days, if not weeks. And when they receive food the quality is horrendous. Sure, they have factories lined up along the border where Mexicans can work; but they aren't allowed to use the products. They aren't even paid a forth of our minimum wage to work there.

If they contribute to our society, fine. If they break laws, take advantage, or dont pay taxes then GTFO. I really am for giving everyone a fair chance. I think they deserve the same opportunity to make a life here, to help support their families back home wherever that might be. I think its a great privilage for them, and as long as they abide by our laws, then theyll be just fine. Our citizenship requirements are a little tough, so maybe they need some revisions. There needs to be standards as far as wages go. They cant be hired for so cheap that we put our other citizens out of buisness. So, wage reforms as well. Quite frankly, I find it disgusting that people are willing to pay them so little for the hard work they do. Cin is right, that isnt their fault.

I don't feel like reading what others said so sorry if I am repeating what others have said. They just think they can cross the border and have a good life in the US. All they do is hurt the American way of life and our economy. This part won't make any sense. With more immigrants coming in the higher the debt went up. Now of course you can't really relates the two. It's like saying babies kill people. When more babies are born the amount of people that are dead goes up.   Anyways the thing that pisses me off the most is when they say that they aren't criminals so don't treat them like they are. Well there is a reason they are called illegals. Not calling an illegal a criminal would be just like letting O.J. go free. Wait this just in O.J. Simpson was found innocent. That can't be right. Well don't pay attention to my last comparison. When you cross the border illegally you become the same as a common criminal.

I feel sorry for all the immigrants. I really do. But this thing is annoying the heck out of me.
I live in Southern California. Yeah sure, there's immigrants in other parts of the country, but here, we got millions. Millions of millions.
Luckily, my town isn't all that ghetto.
I visited my Aunt once. She lives in Downey, CA. Kinda close to L.A.
So, my family and I were walkin' down the street. We did not see any white people there. Only Latinos. Which is pretty sad. They weren't all there 5 years ago! I do feel sorry that they're in the situation that they're in, but right now I'm just annoyed with them all coming here. The Mayor of L.A. isn't much help either. >_<

I live in San Diego, so it is a huge problem where I live, I am not saying that I hate mexicans not at all, but I do not agree with people coming into the country illegally, I use mexicans as an example because that is the main group down here, and as roxasnoxas said their are alot, millions in fact. So schools are being filled as well, along with jobs taken away.

Yeah. I live like an hour away from San Diego, and an hour and a half from L.A.
I'm lucky that I go to a private school. The classes are filled up, but not with illegal children. Maybe our government could help the Mexican government to help all these people out. Make their lives better in Mexico.

*sigh* We all like to be charitable, but our country obviously has problems of its own. In our own situation we should be mainly occupied with ourselves, not sticking our nose into the welfare of Mexican citizens. When natural disasters hit other nations [like the tsunami in Sri Lanka] we are almost obliged to help them. World politics has a lot of lucid masks, we don't give them money because we're generous and pity them. If we ignore their need for help we get marked off as a nation only interested in our selves, therefore severing relationships with not only that country but others as well. If something spontaneous like such happened to Mexico, we would most likely donate money and services to them. All the schools would have food drives and such. However, since the country's underdevelopment is something that has occurred over a period of time, we don't feel obliged to do anything about the issue but attempt to keep them out of our own borders.

It's not just the USA, i was talking about the UK as well & other countries. I can understand that people's lifes are hard, but they are making it harder for us. It is our taxes that has to pay for them. But i can see it from their side, that they need help but i kinda annoy's me that there are thousands of them coming through.

But there are people who complain that immigrants are taking our jobs cause they work for such a low wage, even in those kind of jobs.
Plus Illegal immigrats aren't supposed to be able to work are they not? Don' they need a working Visa?
Spitfire
05-08-2007, 01:18 PM
Correct techniquely they are supposed to have a work visa, and you think they are making it easier. I am going to disagree with that. It sucks down tax dollars like crazy, money that should be going to public projects and what not, is going to social services that are not supposed to be here. I am not saying don't let anyone in, I am saying make it easier for people to work here legally. Sure they do jobs other won't, but by make a work visa eaiser to get that will ensure they still have jobs.
This whole debate is basically why I beleive that America should just buy Mexico...XD
Anyway, like I said before, IT'S NOT THIER FAULT. You know, maybe they need those services like us? They're living people too, money makes the world go round, but if you think of it on a human scale, not economical, you'll see that yet again, it's the americans fault for this. WHY do we give them services like emergency room and insurance and stuff? Because we're ****ing greedy, that's why. The insurance companies and stuff make money off of illegal immagrants jst like the cheap businessmen do. The Immagrants are getting jipped by even being here. And, in all onesty, there's no way to stop immagration, and no wayto stop illegal immagration, however the way we handle them once we get here, that's what can and needs to be changed.

We can sacrifice a few tax dollars and still live. You're all just angry because it means you have to live a little less comfortably. I, for one, can live with the idea of putting up a bit more of my income if it means more people get to live a tad bit better lives.
Honestly, though, we -should- just buy Mexico. We'd be able to provide them with better resources and they'd be able to provide us with more services and workers. We could then expand down there, so we wouldn't be clogging up our own country.

Buy Mexico? Are you guys serious? X3 First off, you have no idea what kind of money pit that would be for us. Plus, would the Mexican government really be accepting to that kind of thing? If the US were to ever buy out another country, it would be for economic reasons. Not because we're feeling generous. Wishful thinking though~

Yea buy Mexico, lets role play that why don't we, first off with the amount of debt that the country is in we can't afford to send money to a town that was just destroyed. Second, no country is going to willingly let their country be bought, honestly, if anything Mexico wants the state of California back, not to be part of America.
We are upset because we have to live a little bit less comfortably. Yea thats it, but not for the reason that the school are being flooded with kids that speak only spanish, and that there are 45 children classroom size. I have to speak spanish at least once a day to talk to parents of kids I take care of.

You really think I'd seriously say that we should buy Mexico? I mean...we technically COULD, but buying that much land, then Americanizing it, the other superpowers of the world would see this as a threat.
Also, what's so bad about that? Are you saying that those kids don't have a right to learn? That because they weren't born in this country they do not have the same rights that we do? They my not be citizens, but we're american damnit, we should be treating other countries and cultures with more respect, especially the people who LIVE HERE. This is why other countires hate us, because we're arrogant and think that because someone is from a different country, wether they be an American citizen or not, we automatically think of them as a foreigner who does not deserve the things we have, because they don't understand our culture, or plain out refuse to. You wanna know why they refuse to? Because the media make this country look like a bunch of glamorous idiots walking around in designer outfits and getting arrested every 2 minutes. But despite all this discrimination, they STILL want to come here, for a chance at a new life. They can't afford to be official about it, does that mean they're any less deserving?

My view, which almost got me banned on another website.
Illegal Immigration = WRONG. If it was right, it wouldn't be called ILLEGAL Immigration. This is mostly the States' fault, as getting to the testing facilities are more difficult than just border hopping. I think if we made it easier, such as provided transport, and all that, then we wouldn't have so much border-hopping as we do now a days. We also wouldn't have as much conflict, either.
Also, immigration is fine with me, but those who intent to immigrate have to at least attempt the language. Now I'm not saying that they have to be fluent, hell I'm not even saying that they have to learn it at all! What I AM saying is that immigrants, if they refuse to learn the language, should lose their right to complain about not being able to understand people. Seriously, it's gotten to the point where America's language won't even be English anymore, because we're promoting the language to being Spanish instead.
We need to find a middle ground.
If you refuse to learn the language, then you also must refuse to complain. If you at least attempt it, then I'm cool with it all.
Rights extend to American citizens, end of story. If you do not want to become an American citizen, then you do not get the rights of an American. Personally, I think this is right, but I don't think anyone should accept it. This sort of idea is a tough-love approach, which would get our point across. It would also nudge more immigrants to try and become proper citizens as well.
Also, we complain about border control, and yet how many soldiers do we have in the state-guard, who do nothing? They don't leave the state they're in, go to boot camp every few months, and get paid like kings. Here's an idea, put them on border control, and at least let them earn their pay. :3

I am mexican as well. I am not intending to be racist, and I know that it sounds as such, as well as I am generalizing as well to my part of the country. I actually didn't intend for this get that out of hand. I don't know to much about other areas of immigration, so I kinda resorted to this one. But on another note I would like to know of other illegal immigration, and where, or if it is affecting the country.
And to put this in again. I am not against people coming to america, Please by all means do it, that is what the country was established on. But do it legally or in the case that I know people will come here to work for a higher wage then back home. So by make a working visa easier to get in would insure that they can be here legally, and as well encourage them to come back.

A bit harsh but in a way true. I don't like that people from other countries just come in illegally and think they are entitled to the same rights as legal Americans.
Imagine you are in one of families that is trying to support each other but their is trouble in your country, you would try to help your family anyway you can, they are stealing jobs but people need to survive like everyone else, like they always say 'Don't hate the player, hate the game'.

This "taking our jobs" thing is getting a little annoying. It's just become an excuse for people to be lazy and then play the blame game. It's called getting off your arse and getting a job. Legal or not, immigrants are just people that want the same opportunites that everyone else is getting. It's kind of sad how Americans are being beaten on their home court for a job that some illegal immigrant is getting within weeks of being in the country, especially when some Americans have been trying hard to get that very same job. Yeah they may work for lower wages, but if anything it should make people appreciate what they alreay have.
In the UK we have quite a large illegal (and legal) immigration problem. Apparantly we became too popular for our own good. Now the NHS is at breaking point, the jails are overflowing and there is a housing shortage. But, as White_Rook said, the jobs 'problem' isn't one to complain about. They work for less, are prepared to do jobs we aren't prepared to do and are often better skilled. I find it quite nice to think that people in other countries find the Uk so attractive.
But one thing I can't stand is free-loaders. People who come over and rely on state benefits, especially when they come over illegally. Although I have the same problem with people who were born in the UK free-loading.........

Yeah well we have the Welfare State which means free health care, free housing, unemployment benefits etc.
People who illegaly come into a country work twice the hours, twice the effort and don't complain about their job because they are trying to feed their family. While normal people work as little as possible because they can feed themselves and live more pleasently and the reason they moan at immigrants is because they know they won't have a job if immigrants are doing better than them.

even though it was wrong what they did, butthere are SO many that if all of them would get deported, a HUGE chunk of tradition, working energy, and that will be a really bad thing for this country.
so the idea that i came up with is to close the borders, secure them, and give the ones here some kind of permit that will allow them to work, live, and have some kind of health insurance IF they have done taxes, have a clean record, if in school, passable grades, know English, have worked for 5 years
BUT something that the ones in DC cnt think of... DON't make them leave the country!
if that "law"is passed, close to Nobody will leave.
also making them pay ridiculesly (sp?) amounts of money will also fail... not many have enough $$$ to pay the fine.
what do you think of my idea..?

Uh...no. People complain because if illegal immigrants work for corporations and accept under the table money people lose jobs and also taxes are not being paid.
Illegal immigrants work for cheap and under the table. We lose money in two ways which most people seem to ignore. When we work anywhere, we also lose some of our money to taxes and also we owe income tax. Our taxes go to funding those who cannot work, are disabled, and those who must use welfare and social security amongst other things like our police force etc. Our tax money goes to work for us, so if we are paying it and they are not, they are screwing us over considering how many of -THEM- get government aid because we hate for anyone to starve to death.
Next, corporations have grown accustomed to this behavior, and bringing in these illegal immigrants for half wages or less. Why should ANYONE get partial pay for work done? If they'd just go through the process of legalizing themselves, they'd get full benefits but because they support this system they get screwed along with others and let corporations continue the abuse.
Illegal immigration is wrong. I do feel bad for them, and think the Immigration laws ought to be less demanding and well, cost less for them to enter the country, but at the same time, they should use the system. They are -illegal- for a reason. They are costing people a lot of money, using our welfare and benefits from taxes AND not paying taxes most of the time. It is out of the kindness of our hearts we let this go on. Because of their burden and not putting anything back in the system but helping a corporation make a quick buck, we are actually being drained more monetarily.
Also, who are you to say that WE here don't work hard? That is really a biased point of view. I have always worked hard as have my relatives and countless others who want to eat. The economy is crap right now and we are all suffering. Yes, they work to be here but people have to stop thinking they work -harder- than others because it's simply not true. Corporations abuse them if they are. In the end, the illegal immigrant is getting what he/she wants at probably 5x the cost of what it would be had they just gone through the procedure to become a U.S. citizen, if not more than that. They are being taken advantage of and what happens when they get injured? These people go to our hospitals and guess who pays? We again do with higher costs to go to the hospital. So we can't cover all Americans with health insurance etc but we should pay for higher rates for drugs and medical visits because of people here illegally?
In the end, we are all getting shafted including the illegal immigrants. I do think the system needs to have an easier time for immigrants to come here LEGALLY but illegal is illegal. Any illegal immigrants should be forced to become legal or get out so that they can start earning wages they should have, they can pay taxes and be a part of our country like any legal immigrants do. That is the reason it is wrong. We all are getting screwed over except the corps that continue to let them come in and work for money under the table and then don't cover them when crap happens because of course the benevolence of the American people will take these people and care for them regardless of the scenario while we can barely care for ourselves with the failing economy and the fact we are in a Recession.

ok bumping this because i want to discuss. anyways, i believe that illegal immigration is bad. because of the fact that it simply breaks the rules. tho, it doesn't seem to be as enforced for illegal Canadian immigrants for some reason as it is for immigrants from Mexico. i think the illegals SHOULD be penalized.
What do u mean they should be penalized?
look they came here for a better life
im here legally but im human enough to understand why they illigaly came
do u think they like being illigal?, cuz they dont
they r doing it as their last hope
i hate it when ppl like u talk bad about them for no reason
y dont u put yourself in their position for once?

But what are your guys' opinions on it.I'm in the northern area of the US (Wisconsin), so I don't get much immigration to hear about.
As for the basis of the idea itself, I very much disagree with people just barging into the country. It's like a father/mother that just barges in on his/her kids whenever they want; it's just annoying and in the end causes nothing but trouble. But like Spitty said, I agree with the encouragement of easier work permits and the like. If we can promote benefits--nice, clean benefits--for people moving here and legally abiding by becoming a 100% legit citizens, it would make things so much easier. Sadly, it's easier said than done.
However, things like the border itself, is another story. I think we should do what Carlos Mencia said a few years ago, "build a super fence." Or at the very least, create mines around the border so that when people come in they get blown up..... Okay I'm just kidding. xD
Ohh, a very interesting and surreal idea would be creating a barrier like the one they had around the house camp in Lost. If you get to close to it, you get electrified.

i do not know what penalty but they need SOME kind of penalty. other wise EVERYONE is just gonna do it. i'm not suggesting we kill them or anything but i was thinking more of a fine. i was also thinking of a one time event? like a 1 month amnesty month where they have a chance to become legal with no questions asked but that deal is not longer good after the month. but they still broke some rules there has to be some kind of penalty.

y dont u put yourself in their position for once? They should be penalized. Sure, they can come for a better life or whatever, but come in legally. Take the time to go through the legal process, coming in illegally helps NO one (except for any business owner that will pretty much abuse them)
From what I read about the Mexican border, it is absolutly impossible to get across other than illegally. You need a lot of money to do so legally, and most people can't afford it.
They should be able to stay if they're following the law and everything, because there's no possible life for them otherwise. And most people actually don't "abuse" their immigrants. That's slavery, not illegal immigration.

Its not that its hard, its that many people are impatcient and can not wait to get across and since its is really easy to get across just by taking a hike through the desert. And I have hiked these routes people take, they are difficult but they get you across quicker than any other way. And these people can't wait, personally after researching this alot more, I think its a better idea to make the standards for getting a working visa much easier. Because then people can get that work here and then go back home for like 3 month of the year, while working 9 months on. Its seems much easier, granted I still don't think that many people jumping the boarder will be down for this, because they still have to get papers but it may help solve some of it. Now I think there will be more because Mexico/U.S. is making it harder to get back in, as in my trips down to Tijuana during weeks will be stopping soon, I used to go down once a month but not anymore because of the hassle.

That's slavery, not illegal immigration. When I say 'abuse' I talking about how companies usually hire them for alot less then minimum wage, you know stuff like that. And they can do that because the workers have no choice, so the people hiring take advantage of them.
It also doesn't help that that the Mexican government wants their citizens to leave their country.
Having alot of poor people and a few rich people in your country = revolts.

is that the current punishment?
anyways, i can see both sides. but my opinion is even though the majority of the people are following all the OTHER laws and are good people, they still need to be penalized for breaking the rules. if the rules aren't enforced then, there really is no point to having them. i think we should make it easier to become legal, i think that's the right approach but i dont' know TOO much about this subject really. but if we figure out someone is illegal, they do need to penalize them.

The way to fix it in my opinion is to make it easier for people to have access to become citizens, make work passes available to those people and also if someone is illegal after the amnesty period, to send them home. I'd give an amnesty period to those already here of 2 months or something, and if people are caught, they get sent home, and then the new system could be implemented to help those who come here.
I know people are running away from some very harsh and horrible conditions, but also they aren't making any changes where they are at either. Heck, how many of our corporations have moved to other countries? I can sympathize to a degree but 'illegal' still is illegal and even if we lessen restrictions, or money costs, some of these people may still do this because corporations will make it look good that they should. I do worry about the conditions they face too as whether legal or illegal, they are still people. At the same time though, it is hurting everyone that this happens except for the businesses who hire them. They get rich while everyone else suffers.
