Linkage. (http://bsalert.com/news/1990/Bill_Nye_Bood_In_Texas_For_Saying_The_Moon_Reflect s_The_Sun.html)

Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.

As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.

But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.

But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.

This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarassment.

Can people get any stupider? This is VERY sad. Not "boo-hoo," but George Bush sad.

I agree, that is sad, however I have to conclude that the people in that town are not stupid, but just took that completely the wrong way. It's sad to say, but on both sides of the science vs religion debate, people will take what the opposite side says to the extremes. The christians in that town who attended the science lectures, although most likely interested, were LOOKING for things to get riled up about. Bill Nye was trying to explain something very basic, but in their eyes it obviously stood for something more. I believe that, for a lack of better term, they WANTED to be pissed off. So the first thing they heard, they got pissed off about.

It's a weird subconcious thing that I suppose we all have.

Wow.

Bill Nye > them.

How can they be so ignorant? Don't their kids get taught in schools that the moon is just a reflector? So sad.

Another fine example of where religious zealots do not want to hear anything that might just go against the bible. If I were there I would have asked them if they still believed the earth was flat too.

Bill Nye > Texan zealots

Texan zealots: working hard to make sure kids grow up stupid. Hee-haw.

I know quite a few. We atheistic liberals are rare here in Texas. Yet, I can't help but feel proud to be a Texan. Don't mess with Texas!

(I love your sig Mirai)

Thank you. I found the pic on myspace.

ok first off, it's "yee-haw," not hee-haw.

and secondly, i don't think one families ignorance to 2nd grade astronamy should ruin the image for all of Texas.

That's not insulting! That's just pointing out that it doesn't produce light! Besides, the bible was written waaaaaaaaayyyy before we discovered this, it wouldn't say, "One light to govern the day, and another to reflect off the Day Light so it can govern the night." People didn't know (if there is god, because I know you ) that god intended for it to reflect off, thus using less energy. Besides, there are even now things to over power what is said in the bible, and remember, it wasn't written by god.

And the whole "Insult to Texans" deal? Nye didn't insult Texans! Beside, it was only a FEW people, oh my god. There are people EVERYWHERE who are strong in their beliefs, not just Texas. I have lived here ALL my life, and only 10% of the people I know are total idiots. The thing that's insulting is that everyone is stereotyping that since that one woman left like that is EVERY Texan believes the bible. Every Texan has a low IQ. Every Texan is not as intelligent as YOU. false, False. Oh and by the way, FALSE. People are so stupid nowadays that they think they are so friggen smart. It's just like racism.

When people say, "Oh, they're all so dumb." They are actually insulting themselves for stereotyping that.

You people make me sick.

EDIT: Btw, I learned that in third grade.

Texas is the biggest continental state in the country, we used to be our own country. This state is as diverse as it is big, the only people left that are that stupid is Waco and El Paso...

I know people in Texas so no, of course I don't think that way but I will say that there are -a lot- of very religious people there as in a lot of southern states and some can be really mean. However, Texas has a lot of good people too and intelligent people. I can say I don't like Texas much for the amount of fanatics, but eh, I also have friends from there so even though I would never want to live there because I'd wait for the good ol boys to teach me about things, it's fine to visit. I'm a Yankee and they all know it when I go to places like that. Oddly, going to Arizona though where I have many relatives, I seldom run into the same deal.

In the end, every place though has its perks and things that anyone from them would want to get rid of. It's not like NY is perfect. After all, we have Hillary. =:/

Interesting... and now I remember why I love this site so much. Hissora, you are awesome. Repliku, equally as awesome. I've watched Bill Nye since I was little; he's a scientist, not a theologist.

Good job, select group of people in Waco; you've managed to make your entire state look like a backwater village of idiots.

Wow. Are they that overzealous that they would deny one of the few things that science does have right? How unfortunate.

I never liked Texas very much. This doesn't help that much. I know this is a stupid stereotype but the whole don't mess with Texas thing. The cockiness just bugs me. And the stupidity doesn't help em. But like I said it's a stereotype and not everybody from Texas is like that.
