View Full Version : Removal of GiF's?
After spending the last few days and the staff also chasing after users with gif's too big...
RoxasvsRiku and other staff have commented we should remove them completely from sigs. For this, I'm asking for your opinion on it.

Do we really? Can it just be limited to one instead?

... it's not the gif's fault, really.
I'm half and half.
Leaning more towards scrapping them all.

I'm partial with this; Yes, gif's are annoying when your internet is running slow or is naturally like that, but I haven't really heard too many complaints on them. Maybe I just haven't been looking for them, but I doubt most people's internet connection is slow enough where gifs slow down the webpage.
It doesn't really effect since I don't plan on having a gif in my sig anytime soon, but without complaints I find restricting them to be pointless.

I thought you guys reduced the sig file size or something. :/
Anyway I love my smacking lips gif, I'd be miserable without it. I say you just tighten the limit instead.

I know there are still dialup users out there and they may have problems with large gifs.
I think people should be limited to 1 gif and 1 gif only. Either have it for your Avvy or your Sig. Not both.
But that's just my views about it.

I thought more on it.
I don't think they should be banned.4.ever.

Maybe just limit to one in a sig.

They really need to go...
The limit sig file size is 500kb. Duel Wielder, your top gif alone is 3mb. Not only is your sig violating the rules, it is slowing the hell out of my computer and it's loading time. It's hard to find gifs that are under 500kb in the first place, so it only makes since to take them out completely like we did with the YouTube videos.
You guys reading forum news would help with the chase.
One: ONE GIF PER SIG!!!
Two: It's limited to 500 kb.
Sorry, I just had to say it cause I posted a reminder about it twice now. Those are the rules currently.
HigherBeing
08-21-2007, 03:15 AM
Ah, 500kb limit? I don't remember reading that, just the limit to one per sig... =\
Well, if that's the case, lol, then that should've been in the first post to begin with, don'tcha think?
Down with gifs.

I'm sorry. I didn't know what size it was. I apologize for any inconvenience. I honestly had no clue. Should eastercat get this message about the size since that's who I got it from?

I think we should remove them from sigs definitely.
Avatars shouldn't be a problem though.
In any case, I agree on the suggestion.
Meh, don't matter, I got rid of mine.XD But, it would be good to get rid of all the overly used GIFs. People be having three GIFs on Username.>_> It would be good to pull some laws down, limit it to only sig or avvy, and only one.

I am split on this one, I think so mostly cause I know people on here are having there load time slowed up by gifs, and they do get annoying when they are too big. I think a smaller file size, but I am leaning towards getting rid of them.

Actually, we can completely ban gif's from sigs through editing the forum.

You'll cause an uproar if you do man, just make it where you can only use one, in either sig or avvy. And it can't be oversized.

Yeah, the avatar gifs are not an issue. The main problem is that the sig space is basicly unlimited in file size, so people think they can just plop any 5mb gif in there. And according to these responces, not many people even knew about the 500kb limit size to begin with.

I think it should just be 1 Gif since some people actually work on their own gifs and it's not that bad as long as the gifs aren't too big. You'd have to be on tremendous slow dial up to be that bothered by one gif in each posting and not everyone uses gifs any way so at most if everyone obeyed that rule, there might be 5 to 8 gifs on the whole page. There are more than that on several websites.

GIFs are videos that most people put in sigs. The ones that move on their own.

Hmm...
Well, I've seen alot of banners and such with animations and they're .gifs(redeyes-whatever has a banner with an animation in it and it's within the limit, and I'm pretty sure that pic of Sora and the gang in Kitty's sig is within the limit, not sure though. Also, Eastercat, SA, and DW(not sure on this one, just a guess because it doesn't have many animations) you'd be screwing over many regs), wouldn't be fair to those people to get royally f*cked because some people can't handle a sig. It is a rule that it can't be over 500kb, I know the staff is busy as hell, but maybe you should just keep enforcing the rule. I know the easy road would be to just not allow them, but that road would include many compalints from those within the rules. i know that doesn't exactly solve the probllem, but maybe be more strict about it. People have a fear of warnings and bans and as cruel as it is to say it, maybe start giving warnings for banners breaking that limit, treat it as any other rule such as spamming. Not the best solution I know, but even that beats just removing them and getting many many complaints.

False! That's an embedded video my friend. A gif is a picture filetype that has some sort of animation.

My gif was around 700 kb, but you can't tell me that slowed down your comps guys.
Anyway I reduced it so it's a little under 500 kb. So plus the image, it should be around 500 or a teensy bit over.
One of the things that utterly upsets me even now about this is that some members still don't realize that we have had a rule about this for months now and people still have blown us off about it.
I posted this in forum news TWICE telling people to lower it to the requirements I said. And yet, this is still a long issue.
Me and several other staff members have been chasing members down for the day, me myself have caught at least 15 members breaking the rules. Two over 3 Mb in their sigs.
Is it really that hard to follow it?
Tikem

Um... Does this affect on avvys? Or is it just for the sigs? (I missed that part)
Avy's for now are safe, we haven't gotten any complaints from members about the size of gif avy's.

I highly doubt it, but will someone let me know if my GIF is breaking the limit?

That one? I could say NO! Hey, I have a comp that's on it's last breaths! And that one doesn't slow down it at all!
Alright, thanks TBM. I wouldn't want to annoy people with it.

For anyone who's wondering, you can check the size of your gif by right clicking it in your signature, going to 'Properties'. The file size should be listed.

Your right there, it is not hard to follow. The sad part is, some people just don't know because they don't check the forum news section. I know no knowledge of the rules is their fault and they should take it upon themselve to check amd know them, but the thing is, they don't. As I said, start giving warnings, I'm sure people will learn real quick

Pretty much, having two GIF's that were the size that they were wasn't really legit.
And basically, having more than one just isn't gonna work here.
I noticed one of the staff members (I think Hissora) has a 1,000 KB GIF in their signature.

I say that you should only be able to have a GIF in your signature or your avatar, not both. Having one in both slows my computer down. This would also be a good idea because it allows people to have at leat one GIF.

Like i've said.
I completely disagree.
We just need to enforce it more. Just simply removing the sig straight away is more efficient.

We just need to enforce it more. Just simply removing the sig straight away is more efficient. It's going to get harder because 1) this is a huge fan site (one of the biggest in the KH franchise), 2) the bandwidth is increased by member activity/traffic alone, and 3) with bandwidth increasing by user avatars and signatures having an uncontrollable amount of GIF's by an almost-just-as-much uncontrollable amount of members, it would drive the bandwidth out the window and the site could become insanely slow load-time-wise.
Now, I also would hate to get rid of the GIF's. But it's getting to the point that maybe we should do something about it.
I personally wouldn't be against making GIF's a premium-only reward for being such a good member and staying active (enough to become premium). IMO, this would reduce a lot of the users who join, put GIF's in their sigs and never come back. Ever.
Thoughts?

I still think complete ban isn't nessasary, and think that just enforcing it more would be a better solution. =/
Edit: You said do something about it, well really we aren't, maybe the odd nice PM saying can you remove it, but really we aren't enforcing it as much as we could.
Just removing the sig straight away if it breaks the limits, and leave a note in their sig space saying
"Max gif limit is 500kb, please read the rules"
Darkwatch

that would be an alright idea....i wouldnt mind that....i would rather we keep all gifs, but if its taking too much of the bandwidth, i suppose thats not so bad....

Maybe people should get High speed connections. Just because a few people cant handle something doesnt mean you have to ruin it for the people who can.
So dont remove GIFs. It spoils the fun of the people who have high speed connections.

Asking people to pay more for their internet is a little much to ask, don't you think?
I don't think GIFs should be removed...people spend time making them, and they're fun to have in sigs and avatars. There's already a limit on how many and how large they can be, so I don't really see a point in getting rid of them completely. It would just be boring without them.

Tough decision... I'm in the middle. GIF's slow down dial-up users even more, but they're gun to look at.
Repliku
10-03-2007, 03:50 AM
Even on dial-up you have to have a slower than 56k connection to really be bothered, I'd think. Gifs are mostly small and so enforcing people to 1 gif at the size that's been said seems good enough. It sucks that the mods and admin have to go around and tell people to fix the gif situation, but at the same time, it would stink to not have the option of having a gif at all for some sigs. I hope that gifs aren't taken away in entirety and it's sad some people go overboard and don't fix it so that the rest of us can enjoy the privilege to have them. I see why the mods are getting frustrated. 4 months is a while and by now everyone -should- know better.
