View Full Version : The Downfall of Sony

Sony is shooting itself in the foot.
Seriously.
Look at what they've done with the Playstation 3. In my opinion, they've made the price way too high. Their aim is soaring above the clouds and drifting into space. They've change the release date for Europe and they're were always saying that they'll have a Worldwide release.
In a vain attempt to beat Microsoft, they send like 4/5 of their stock on PS3's to North America and 10,000 PS3's in Japan. Thus leaving themselves wide open in Japan for a Nintendo takeover.
Microsoft send X-Box 360 to Japan, things go way down. Sony sends Playstation 3 to North America, but so far from what I've seen, they've pratically done nothing. Now, Nintendo can go, "WHOOSH!" and sell Wii's and be very successful! (nothing against Nintendo)
I believe that Sony is losing it's footing in the lead of 'New - G Console' to the Wii and X-box. Also by the time anyone actually wants Blu-Ray (if that does in fact become a standard) it will be too late.
Any thoughts to what nonsense I just said?

Well this is the short time, Sony are expected to not do well in the short term, but the PS3 is made for the long term, they are trying to extend the gap between generations. Look at the PS2, even though the 360 was released more people bought a PS2 this year then a 360, and the PS2 is not going to die yet, and the PS3 is expected to do the same, but even longer, for the next 2 years it's going to be hard for Sony, but once the price drops, and there is a small price difference, everyone is going to get a PS3 no doubt about it. Look Sony got a 70% market share in the last generation. There are many loyal fans, but just don't have the money. Just wait in see in 3-4 years time Sony will be winning the console wars.

They'll never win the console war if they can't produce enough units and get them in stores.
I might buy a PS3 eventually, but they'd have to drop the price to around $400 before I'd even consider it.

This is the same situation the ps2 was in...delays and shortages. The ps2 was so high up that sony had nowhere to go but down. Samegoes for MS and Nintendo, they were so low they had no where to go but up. I'm not excusing Sony's screw ups, believe me. But I'd be naive to have expected any different outcome than the one that's currently playing out. It was an inevitability that the PS3 wasn't going to be the "one-stop" shop for exclusives that the PS2 was, and we've known this for almost two years now.
Let's look at the franchises that are losing their exclusitivity; GTA, Ninja Gaiden, VF, DQ, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, etc......do we notice a trend? The vast majority of exclusives lost between the consoles are huge games, with extremely high production values; Basically, games that at such an early era in the generation need to be multiplatform. Developers like Bethesda and Rockstar aren't trying to reach wider audiences because they're losing faith in one of the consoles.....they're doing it because there's not enough consoles to sustain themselves and their games on. They need to take GTA to more gamers, because if they don't, they're going to bleed money. They need to put Oblivion on every single platform they can(hell, even the PSP gets a version, for christ's sake!) to recoup the massive development costs.
If developers and publishers were moving exclusives because of a loss of faith, we'd be seeing games like Disgaea, Okami, Genji, The Getaway, etc. go multiplatform. But we're not. We're seeing the heavy-hitters go multiplatform. Of there are games like Enchant Arms and Gundam and others go, but probably for the same reason.
The biggest blunder Sony has done was launch late. There's no sign of slowing demand for the PS3, so it's premature to attribute the loss of exclusives to something other than that at this point. The fact that Tecmo is testing the PS3's waters with Ninja Gaiden, and Bethesda is bringing over Oblivion, is proof of a changing industry due to development costs more than anything. Sony's exclusives are dropping faster because they had more exclusives to lose.

DarknessKingdom is right, the PS3 is Sony's downfall.
Tell me, why pay $600 dollars for a game system (downfall to past consoles, right Neogeo?).
And with only one good game, how will it survive the its the next couple months?
Even if you wait a couple years, it would be too late.

It won't be $600 forever, it will lower, and by this time next year it could be $450. And also many great games, like DMC4, MGS4, FFXIII and many more. All launches suck, don't judge them yet, even the 360 had a sucky launch.
The PS3 will easily survive the next few months, demand is huge, look at ebay. The PS3 is not going to die, I can tell you that, Sony still has a big fanbase.

Yeah. I believe they released the PS3 way too soon. I even read in a magaine that it was going to have new controllers and everything, but no. They just rushed it to get all the good sales. I also heard that most Ps3s are full of bugs and stuff.

As I said Sony released the console too late, but you got to hand it to them; There are literally zero bugs with the ps3, which is a shock due to sony's hardware history. Launch for all console are bad, but the ps3 launch was a hell of a lot better then the ps2 launch, unless of course you call Fanatavision a great game. 360 launch was meh, and even the Wii's was too. Give them a year and you'll get some great games, it took the 360 3-4 month and it'll be the same for the ps3 and Wii.

Exactly, though some of the PS3's hardware is a bit half-assed, there are no bugs, while the 360 is still suffering problems.
I also agree on the games front, this generation, the Wii had the lanuch, thought it wasn't great. From memory, there was nothing great about the launch of the 360, and the PS3 one had caused lots of problems in the US and has been delayed in Europe. But never judge a consoles by it's launch, judge it in a few years time.
