It's because of FMA that I'm here, really; FMA was the first anime I was ever introduced to, and I was HOOKED. The most I cried was when Hughes died. His poor daughter when she was telling her mom to make them stop I just lost it more than you would think. Then I cried some more when Ed died, they ended the flipping ep with the light leaving his eyes. That kind of stuff hits me hard (personaly i think wolf's rain does the best 'light leaving eyes' stuff)
Anywho I cried tons more at the movie, not saying what because I don't want to ruin it!

Actually, Amestris is one of the more central countries; if you'll notice, in FMA there's barely any Japanese influnce; the signs are all in English, and episode 10 is the only episode I can remember where they use chopsticks and eat Japanese food. Episode 10 is really more filler than anything; details like the hospital and the food are seen here, then never seen again. I suppose the hospital can be explained away as alchemy's giving them more advancements.

From CoS though, I'd say Amestris is supposed to be more of a German/English influence, rather than Japanese. If you've been reading the manga, you'd notice that the "far east" equivalent would be Xing, not Amestris, with Drachma as a Sibera/Russia.

Definitely one the best anime series that I've ever watched. I got really hooked to the story and the characters very easily, especially Ed because he just rocks my socks off with his automail/alchemy moves and his spazzes whenever people call him short. :D

But overall, Fullmetal Alchemist is worth watching, even if the storyplot is very different than the manga version of FMA.

The eastern country Xing and the northern country Drachma are explained more in the manga... Xing especially; I can't keep up with the fansubbed manga, so I only know that Drachma is starting to become important. I honestly can't remember the name of the countries to the west and south.
