I just saw this on the news..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7182817.stm

A pair of twins who were adopted by separate families as babies got married without knowing they were brother and sister, a peer told the House of Lords.

A court annulled the British couple's union after they discovered their true relationship, Lord Alton said.

The peer - who heard of the case from a judge who was involved - said the twins felt an "inevitable attraction".

He said the case showed how important it was for children to be able to find out about their biological parents.

Details of the identities of the twins involved have been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not realise they were related until after their marriage.

'Truth will out'

The crossbench peer, a former Liberal Democrat MP, raised the couple's case during a House of Lords debate on the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill in December.

"They were never told that they were twins," he told the Lords.

"They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

He told the BBC News website that their story raises the wider issue of the importance of strengthening the rights of children to know the identities of their biological parents.

"If you start trying to conceal someone's identity, sooner or later the truth will out," he said.

"And if you don't know you are biologically related to someone, you may become attracted to them and tragedies like this may occur."

Pam Hodgkins, chief executive officer of the charity Adults Affected by Adoption (NORCAP) said there had been previous cases of separated siblings being attracted to each other.

"We have a resistance, a very strong incest taboo where we are aware that someone is a biological relative," she said.

"But when we are unaware of that relationship, we are naturally drawn to people who are quite similar to ourselves.

'Incredibly rare'

"And of course there is unlikely to be anyone more similar to any individual than their sibling."

Mo O'Reilly, director of child placement for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering, said the situation was traumatic for the people involved, but incredibly rare.

"Thirty or 40 years ago it would have been more likely that twins be separated and, brought up without knowledge of each other," she said.

Today, however, adopted children grow up with a greater knowledge of their birth families - and organisations try to place brothers and sisters together.

If that were not possible, the siblings would still have some form of contact with each other.

"This sad case illustrates why, over the last 20-30 years, the shift to openness in adoption was so important," Ms O'Reilly added.

Doesn't that just SUCK for them? I bet they had sex. Dx

This is truly terrible. It isn't fair to force them into divorce. They don't see each other as family, so why should they have to be seperated. Human beings are so ferful, so they try to make sure that which they fear doesn't exist. In this case, retarted children. I feel like ending here because I'm kinda sleepy.... G'night....

EDIT: Also, royalty would have their kids marry each other or their cousins or whatever. They were called Blue Bloods and it was a sign of royalty. Their skin couldn't forn scabs to stop the bleeding, so they bleed to death. There blood also had a blue tint, hence the name Blue Blood.

Web toes anyone?

That's sick. Wouldn't there be some sort of physical similarities? Plus, they should have been told that they were related.

It is legal in the UK for cousins to marry. Only direct blood relatives (such as parents, siblings, and children) cannot marry each other.

This is another case where twins have had their lives destroyed because of not knowing their identity as a twin. The other case being in America where a medical study was run to see how growing up in different environments affected development. They were split up for 30 years (I think ._.) before they finally discovered they each had a sister. Their life together was destroyed in the name of a study (that they were actually dropped from before its conclusion).

To the people saying "ewww": They didn't even know they were brother & sister. Look at the reality here a little.

I think this is a little awkward, but just because it's considered "wrong" by the people to marry twins, doesn't mean it is wrong, it's just quite disgusting is all.

lol

Oh, poor people. I read about this the other day, but I didn't really give it much thought...

I don't see that it's wrong for them to have been married, since they didn't even know that they had twins, let alone that they were each other's twins. It's still incest, but not as bad...unintentional incest.

Bit of a nasty surprise when they found out, I'd suspect.

Well, it is a little gross and I do feel bad for them, but think about it. If you believe in fate and whatnot, then maybe this is the way that they were supposed to meet. I mean but be realistic and think about it.

Say you met somebody who was somehow in-tune with you and understood you better and loved you more than anyone else in the world. Isn't that what a twin basically is? And if you never knew ANYTHING about having a brother or sister, if you met someone like this would you be thinking "OMG its my long lost twin who I never knew about!" Or would you be thinking "OMG This person is so amazing, we were meant to be together!"

I'm just glad they didn't have any children, though.

That's really sad. To think they found each other and yes, I can see how twins could be drawn to one another and well this could happen. I hope they both are alright and still talk to each other and can move on. I also appreciate the fact that the government isn't just giving out their names to everyone and hopefully they can move somewhere and people just leave the two have their lives and not go on about it. It would suck for them to be bothered by this anymore than necessary. I hope it doesn't also prevent either one from marrying other people and having relationships. This is just one of the most awkward situations that could ever happen and people joke about it in movies and I laugh but wow...it's just tragic to see it really happen.

I do think the laws for siblings at least to know of each other is important. Even if you don't want the kids to know the adults who kids were taken from or something, at least let the siblings be knowing of the others. Yeesh, what a stupid thing to have happen that could have been prevented just by saying that the kid had a twin.

Gotta admit, that's the first time I've heard of this happening in real life. I'm sorry this happened, but at the same time...

In some cultures, twins are viewed as destined soul-bound life partners, and many actually do get married and have a life together.

Society.
