View Full Version : All Cutscenes Are FMV's
Crisp

I found out about this long ago, but decided to post about it now.
A FMV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_motion_video) is pre-recorded animation in a video game. (example: Kingdom Hearts's openings)
All cutscenes in Re: Chain of Memories are FMV's. This includes all scenes in Destiny Island and Twilight Town worlds, and between floors in Castle Oblivion (with voice acting).
There's a total of 104 separate video files, which take up more than 2.40 GB of space on the game disk! The total size of the disk is 4.12 GB.
Anyone, with the game and proper computer programs, can rip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripping) these videos to their computer.
The thing is, is that the PAR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio) is 22:15 (320x352). This means that the image would look like this (http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3647/69175915xw6.png), instead of this (http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/9438/75596846el0.png), if the video wasn't stretched out when played. I sure this was an attempt to compress space.
I was surprised when I realized I wasn't watching real-time animation; makes me admire the animation goodness even more in this installment of KH. Square really took their time on the animation on this one (it's more than half the game, literally).
Proof of ripped video (http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/Roxllen/?action=view¤t=089.flv) (no subtitles)
Yay for parentheses and links to Wikipedia!
But if they are all pre-recorded.
How is it possible that we can see the keyblade that me use or a other weapon?

This form is under Re: Chain of Memories. In this game, you always use the same weapon: The Kingdom Key

I will have all 104 videos uploaded for your AMV editing and viewing needs.
I don't know when it will be finished, but I probably might have the videos all in split ZIP files since there's so many.
The videos will have the same level of quality as my other videos I have uploaded (also updating those videos as well).

Too bad we couldn't just use those as KH-vids "official" videos of Re:CoM. I mean, no subtitles is like an AMV maker's dream...

whats the file extension, .pss? pss video files tend to be very large to make up for high quality. but then again...the individual cutscenes aren't that long anyway. can you give a list of tools that you use to rip them?

Audio is unplayable when you extract it directly from the PSS file.
I'm going to convert and shrink them to AVI files, so that they can be a more comfortable overall file size. Extracting audio is a difficult task if you don't already know it, so I will do it for you.

Here are the tools you would need, in the order I use them:
DVD Decrypter
TheFileSplitter
Nova Software Extractor
PSS_demux
WinHex
VirtualDub
Switch
Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0
VirtualDubMod
---
If you need to know about the steps taken, I'll PM you my procedure.

*by the way, are there other tools that can extract other files within the games intead like sounds and models/animations? (whats "PM" mean?)

Yes, thanks anyways xD.
My Internet keeps skipping, meaning that sometimes it just stops working for a minute, then starts working again. This is keeping me from uploading the files. =/ This is forcing me to split the file eight ways just to upload it.
And I made a short parody out of them from the boredom. =D
I'll make a separate thread for it.

Hmm... I don't see why not. Think I should request if they could be "official?"
I haven't looked at them yet, but if these come straight from the discs without subtitles, the quality is surely better than anything else out there, right? And since all we have are Japanese subtitles cluttering up the screen, I know there's a lot of people who would prefer the non-subtitled ones to the Japanese titled.
I say go for it. ;)

Okay, I converted all the videos in WMV format so they could be added to the cutscene archive. Windows media video will still retain the good quality, but still have small file sizes. I was told that spdude will add the videos in the next few days or so, but I'll give you the download links now.

Now if only someone could do those Reverse Rebirths with some subs so I can understand what they are saying. However, I must commend you that these look much better than the videos up already. The only thing we seem to be missing really from KH-Vids section is the remaining RR in subbed. I almost had my hopes up that these were it!!! But still, I am very impressed at how much better these videos are in detail.

Hello everyone! First of all pardon me for my english. It's terrible, I know. :stupid:
I'm trying to adjust the WMV video 'cause they are not so good. The original AspectRatio (I will refer to this concept writing "AR" in the rest of the post) is a kind of 16:9, but the linked WMV have an AR of 4:3.
As you can see thechracters seem to be "taller", and the circles (like the shield or the keybade's mouse pendant) become oval. I'm tryng to recompress these WMV using Avisynth and the XviD codec and setting the corret AR, these are the results.

About Mushi-shi's concerns, you're right, 4:3 is the incorrect aspect ratio. After using a video capture device to capture some cutscenes, I now believe Kingdom Hearts plays them at an aspect ratio of 1.53:1. I'll fix then reupload them at once.

Actually, in a way, it can be, it won't be a direct rip, though. Don't count on this happening, because people probably wouldn't want to re-record all of the cutscenes, but there is a cheat code that can be used to remove subtitles.

Yeah, I actually figured that out XD The thing is, the only header I found distorted the audio by decreasing the speed (affects both tempo and pitch). I had to play around with that to make it sound normal. The problem is that when I change the pitch using Sony Vegas, the audio glitches up in the first few seconds.
Thanks to both of you, but the only thing I really need help with is finding a .wav header that doesn't distort the audio.
Oh, and Crisp, is that the correct aspect ratio for ReCoM (used in your videos), or is it a guess? It looks a little off to me.

Your video's aspect ratio might be the correct one after all. I checked the cutscenes in the video archive, and I found they match closely to your AR. I used to think it was that too, why did I change my mind? It makes more sense that it would play like that, other than the random number I got. Hey, I'm the perfectionist myself.
Assuming you have the excess data on the end of your wav files, I have a solution for that as well. I used a program called Virtualdub.
The steps are easy:
1) Open, in VirtualDub, a video file of at least 50,000 frames length.
2) Go to Audo>Audio from another file...
3) Open the wav file you wanna trim
4)Go to Video>Frame Rate...
5)Choose "Change so video and audio durations match"; OK
6)File>Save WAV...
After saving, you're done!
You should have a fully working wav file ready to be combined with the videos, no more messing around in another video editing program!
iwantedtoexplode
03-05-2009, 01:11 AM
I actually took off the excess data at the end XD I deleted all of the 00's after the last significant digit.
I don't really like Virtual Dub Mod. The quality is excellent, but the files are HUGE, like a few gigabytes for a few minutes. Plus, I haven't been able to find a way to combine video files, so that there aren't about 70 different files for Sora's Story alone.
The draw back with Vegas though, is that it can be glitchy when rendering the file.

You need to select a codec to compress the video so that the file isn't so huge. In VirtualDubMod, select Video>Compression... Then you can select from any one of your already installed codecs.

Hey Crisp, I came across this topic while looking on how to remove subtitles...do you have Files of KH1 and KH2 with Subtitles removed?
I'd prefer to just Download them instead of removing them and re-rendering them myself.
THANKS!

you can't rip KH1 and KH2 cutscenes. there in real time, not pre-rendered (besides CGI).
but there is a way to do it. but you'd have to re-record all the KH2 cutscenes with the no subtitle cheat code on.

Yep, I would do that, except I don't have a capture card, and I hear they're pricey >_>; Plus, I would have to hook up my PS2 (not that big of a deal), since my Codebreaker doesn't work with my PS3.

i've recorded some of the KH cutscenes in High Definition (1280x720) with the no subtitles code on for amv's.
once i finish them all i may upload them or make a torrent of all of them.
