Public Service Announcement:

*DO NOT ENABLE AUTO WII UPDATES WITH THE NEW PATCH*
:\

Nintendo is apparently going out of their way to disable homebrew, because they want to take preventative measures against emulation

Since the Wii can not only play GC games, but it turns out, emulate old game code with the Virtual Console (as in, those games are modified versions of the originals, and most of their code is the same), hackers and programmers can easily make emulators for homebrew, since the Wii can already use most of the code

New Wii updates however, will be taking preventative measures against emulation, etc. The problem is, this also hurts our chances of creating legit homebrew.
In other words, they are stamping out all homebrew, even legal, to prevent people from doing the illegal.

So, if possible, WAIT TO UPDATE
There will always be hacks going around their patches, but those hacks take time, and as the fixes get tighter and tighter, more time will be required.

Now to the stuff you came for:
-----------------------------------

[WARNING: Using the "Twilight Hack" (Which I describe here) voids your warranty!]

Most Wii homebrew is launched through the homebrew channel, you're probably wondering, how do you get this?

I've done it, its quite easy

The minimum requirements (Stuff you ABSOLUTELY need)

A Wii, preferably new
An SD card (like, the ones you use with digital cameras)
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii version)

I don't have the time to post the full tutorial right now, so if someone else could, that'd be really really awesome.

But, here's the overview

There's an exploit in LoZ:TP, which involves using a hacked save, that makes Epona's name some long string of random characters in the save file. What this does, is make your Wii go like "OMGWTF?!?!?" and then crash, at which point homebrew can be launched directly from an SD card inserted into the Wii SD slot. The most common one is to use the HBC (Homebrew Channel) installer, allowing you to launch homebrew directly from the Wii Menu. (If you don't install the HBC, you probably will have to re-do the TP save exploit every time you want to launch a homebrew app, meaning you'll have to have Twilight Princess every time you want to run a homebrew app)

from the homebrew channel, you can put homebrew apps on an SD card and run them from the Wii menu. The hardest part is installing the HBC, from there its easy, once you figure out the HBC filesystem.

So, thats the gist of it. If someone would post a full tutorial, that would be great. For those of you who are tech savvy, you can just use Wikipedia and other resources, for those of you who don't know a byte from a string, you can wait, and one of us will soon get a step by step tutorial.

For those of you who get this joke, you might be tech savvy.

just one question: is this legal?

i mean it's fine if it's illegal as long as it's not copyright infringement or anything that would potentially damage consoles or void the warranty.

any chance you figured out bout the warranty issue yet? i'm curious as to what the homebrew does but i'm someone who HAS to keep his warranties intact.

Unauthorized [by nintendo] modification of your console voids the warranty.

IE, it's your fault if you screw it up doing something like that.

apparently there is, i've seen videos of it but they never say what it actually does.

jlhack, you should add a disclaimer about the warranty.

I just heard that you can play downloaded gamecube games on the Wii using homebrew. That may not be true.

it certainly sounds believable since the Wii IS equipped to play Gamecube games and even HAS gamecube games to be downloaded and played.

but what i'm curious is: what can the homebrew programs do (the legal stuff, not the copyright infringement stuff like emulation)

Where do you download gamecube games?

Where do you download gamecube games?

questions such as that are not allowed here.
that is, if your talking about illegally downloading them.

to buy them and download them is another question,
which can be done through the wii i believe.

and the best leaked program is the ISO loader the wii has ;o

actually, i'm not entirely sure if they have Gamecube games avialable for download in the Wii's shop channel. i know they have N64 but i never checked for gamecube.

Oh, the shop channel. No they dont have any. I guess its a homebrew thing. They would take up alot of memory though.

the Wii can defintely run Gamecube games since you can pop the disc in and it plays.

btw.....does this belong more in the General Gaming section? i dont' really see how this fits in the Code Vault.

oh right, lol. i don't know either if it even has ripped gamecube games. i don't even think there is enough space on the Wii to hold it. i believe the Wii only has like 500 MB of space.

It has to be more than that because N64 games are 32mb each.

it's not exactly clear because the Wii tells the memory in terms of blocks which doesn't really say the real amount. but i heard the Wii does run out of memory fast if you get alot of downloadable games from the Wii Shop Channel.

Ok. Maybe Gamecube games could be download onto a 2gb Wii memory card and played on a Wii with homebrew. Or there is a program you can run on a Wii with homebrew that rips Gamecube games. @_@

oh yea, i just remembered about SD cards, you can save downloaded games onto them if i'm not mistaken. i don't know if there's a homebrew that allows gamecube games to be downloaded, i don't really care for that either, i personally would think it's easier to just go out and buy the games.

......is it ok for us to be talking about this? i honestly don't know.

Its ok. You can rip games just as long as you own them.

more importantly, what about the cheat program for games.

I am completely dissapointed that neither Datel nor Madcatz released any sort of cheat device.

So there is a cheat program called "Ocarina", but since I haven't used it I myself don't know the exact details and I'm currently waiting for my friend to let me borrow LoZ: TP , for me to use the twilight hack and get the homebrew channel.

This sounds kind of risky. Is there a chance you could break your Wii if you use Homebrew Channel the right way?

if there is a bug in the homebrew such as a memory leak or something fatal. the most it will do is crash the wii. you just need to restart the wii to fix it.

Will it happen again after that?
