I was trying to figure out how to use gradients and I ended outting these lines through it.

How do I get them out?

Contol+Z.
then go Edit>Copy visible>Edit paste.
Then go Filters>colors>Gradient map.
Then set the layer mode to whatever mod is good.
Press control + L to get the layers pallet up, and at the top there should be a thing that says normal.
Click on that to get a drop down menu.
That's how you change the mode.
Then mess with the opacity, which is right below that.

Go to that The GIMP thing, it looks like an aim friends list like I said.
You should see two colr things.
One is the foreground color, one's the background color.
So, just click on the foregroung color one and choose your color.
Then go filters text freetype.
Choose your font.
