No, it's definately not that. I either save manually before turning it off or wait until I know it's autosaved. Sometimes I do both. I'm really careful with that for some reason.

If it turns out he is, the first thing I'm doing is killing him. Also, DMC as a franchise will lose A LOT of fans. I think they lost a few with Nero, so a new Dante is not gonna work.
