100-Degree Heat Spreading East

A late-June heat wave continues to rewrite the record books across a large swath of the country. Friday brought several all-time record highs, including 109 degrees at both Nashville, Tenn., and Columbia, S.C. In addition, a slew of June monthly records were tied or broken from the Ohio Valley to the Carolinas.

The previous day, Ft. Wayne, Ind. tied its all-time record high from 1988 and the "Dust Bowl" years of 1936 and 1934! Monthly records were tied or broken from Ohio to Arkansas. It was the hottest single day in Indianapolis since 1954, and was the sixth straight day of 110-plus degree heat in Hill City, Kan.

Record breaking heat will persist in the Southeast, Ohio Valley, Mid-South and Plains states.

St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway to the West felt more like the Gateway to the Desert Southwest on Thursday, as the mercury topped out at a torrid 108 degrees, the warmest day since July 18, 1954. The mark of 108 also established a new record high for the entire month of June. The previous June record of 105 had been set in 1936 and again in 1952. That old mark was beaten again Friday at 106 degrees.

Highs in the upper 90s and 100s remain in the forecast each day through next week! It's not out of the question that they could again equal or exceed 105 degrees through Sunday!

According to the National Weather Service, it has been 58 years since St. Louis has seen as many as three straight days of triple-digit heat. In that same year, 1954, St. Louis recorded its all-time record high of 115 in mid-July. With worsening drought, we'll see what July 2012 holds.

Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville maxed out at 103 degrees Thursday, breaking the all-time June record high of 102 set three times previously (1936, 1944, 1952). Then, on Friday, the Derby City went even higher, hitting 105 for yet another June record.

Triple-digit highs remain possible both days of this weekend as well.

On average, Louisville sees around one day of 100-degree heat annually. You don't have to go far back in time to find their last time in the 100s prior to Thursday. Last September, highs were 100+ on the first three days of the month.

Nashville, Tennessee

Virtually unprecedented heat smothered Music City on Friday, as the mercury shot up to 109 degrees, crushing the all-time record for any date in Nashville weather records. That record had been 107 degrees on July 27 and 28, 1952.

Our forecast shows highs in the 100s each day through the weekend and into early next week! It will be difficult to match Friday's exceptional and historic heat, but Saturday may come close.

Nashville averages around two days in the 100s each year.

Atlanta, Georgia

It had been almost five years since Atlanta officially recorded a 100-degree reading. In August 2007, the city spent an amazing 9 days in the 100s!

But that five-year wait ended Friday, when Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport hit 104 degrees, blowing away the old June record of 102 set June 17, 1936. Only a pair of days in July 1980 have ever been hotter in Atlanta weather records, at 105.

Atlanta will have another shot at that rare 105-degree mark on Saturday and Sunday. Worse, the unusually low humidity that accompanied Friday's 104-degree heat will be replaced by muggier conditions, and the "feels-like" temperature could flirt with a dangerous 110 degrees.

Raleigh, N.C.

In contrast with Asheville, summers are typically hot on the plains of central and eastern North Carolina. Ninety-degree-plus highs are typical from late June through the first half of August. Triple-digit heat sears the capital city 1-2 days a year, on average. Last year, however, there were 9 such sizzling days, all in July.

It looks like this may be another brutal summer for the Triangle area, as Raleigh-Durham tied its all-time record high on Friday, reaching 105 degrees. That is their fourth 105-degree reading in history -- but this weekend could bring the first-ever 106-degree high temperature to the Triangle record books.

Triple-digit June heat has flared up in recent years, including a late June day in 2010, and a pair of early June days in 2008 (Jun. 8, 10).

Washington, D.C.

If Friday's destructive thunderstorms weren't enough, more triple-digit heat is in the offing for the rest of the weekend.

Friday, Reagan National Airport reached a searing 104 degrees for a new June record. The all-time record of 106 was left intact, and highs this weekend will probably fall short of that.

Unfortunately, D.C. will still be around 100 degrees this weekend with stifling humidity and the chance for a few thunderstorms. Not very comfortable!

This is crazy. Where I'm at right now, the heat is almost unbearable. I bike over an hour to and from work, but this weather would kill me.
