I wouldn't hit you because hitting is wrong. I would hit you because I thought it would diffuse the situation. I might say that hitting someone when it will not diffuse a situation is wrong, but blatantly saying that hitting is wrong would be worthless.

That's where you are causing harm for nothing but your emotions and pride.

I'm not getting the rest of that, unless you are just pointing out that people aren't consistent. That is true. When it comes down to it, most people don't believe in things like the social contract (the idea that you have are held to some unsigned contract with society to follow the laws they decide on and basically do things they way they do them). Every single person who argues for the social contract argues against it when society comes down on them.

Basically they want free evil. That is the same for the clamor to war. Emotional highs, the feelings of revenge... Our way or high way. But no guilt, no backlash.

It's the same with meat eating. You love your chicken sandwich, but if I handed you the knife and the chicken, would you kill it?

There is no such thing as right or wrong, but I think most people have a common goal and that goal is what "right" is based on. That goal is "to bring the least harm to the greatest number of people".

The problem with a death sentence is that the one advocating it usually fails to include the condemned in the total number of people being harmed. The question should be, "Will this death decrease harm enough cancel the harm done by taking a life?", not, "Do they deserve it?" In other words, are you trying to eliminate a risk or get revenge?

Painless methods of killing something are almost always better if you have to do it. Lethal injection or overdose of sedatives seem to be the best. You just fall asleep and never wake up.
