    today. at 5. on amc.
    go. run. hurry.

I saw a commercial for this a couple weeks ago but totally forgot about it until today. Right before it starts. life, huh?

A death in the family plus funeral arrangements and traveling and coordinating and tons of crying from everyone I know for a week straight has made this one of the worst weeks ever so this is veerry appreciated. But it's all over now. Gonna go lose myself in meth-related shenanigans. If you know what I mean.

This time last year I got into a big RJA kick. It's one of those bands that I've known of for years, I find it hard to believe that anyone survived 2006-07 without at least knowing about Face Down, but when I actually listened to them came to fully appreciate them. I haven't listened to them much since, but will sometimes listen to a song or two. I think my favorite album of theirs is Am I the Enemy, followed closely by Lonely Road. I think they're about equal. I was never able to get into their first album as much.

I would encourage anyone to give them a listen. I think it's one of those bands that you could easily get a bad impression of if you're only going by what the radio plays. They're not one of my favorites but they've got some good stuff that's worth listening to imo.

And apparently they have a new album out that I haven't heard yet.

Is not making the end of The Dark Knight Rises Batman flying around buildings in Gotham viewed from one camera angel with this music and at the end him flying up to the camera and saying "some days you just can't get rid of a bomb" and then credits roll. Seriously, Nolan what were you thinking?

    apes

I just watched Rise again and something I noticed this time that I missed before is the incredibly small mention about a shuttle being lost in space. I've seen the original since last I saw Rise, and knowing what happened in that and then hearing how a shuttle lost in space has already been set up for this franchise has me so excited. (If there's something in Dawn about this please don't spoil it.) I reeeally want to see Dawn because I thought it looked really good and now seeing ratings and hearing that it actually is really good has me even more excited. The only dilemma is that I'm not sure I want to pay for it. ugh decisions. Also I love everything about the credit sequence in Rise. I just think that's so cool and then seeing how it's payed off in Dawn. I think this franchise has legs and I hope it goes on for a long, long time.

    if you could

change one silly, pointless thing, what would it be?

i'd get rid of standalone DVDs. seriously. fuck those things. it's ****ing 2014 people still associate with DVDs over BD. And what's worse is that a lot of BDs come with DVDs as well so theres no reason to not buy the bd. Do your part to move us forward and stop buying DVDs. It's not like BDs are all that more expensive anyway. And dvds are so cheaply made these days, why would you want them over bd? I'd pay the $5-$10 difference just to have something that looked better. I mean look at this ****. Are you kidding me? Granted, the bd artwork for that particular one isn't that great as well but it's not THAT bad.

i'd also make sure that slipcovers never went out of print, that every bd came with an insert with artwork like the old pixar dvds, and that there wasnt 15 versions of everything.

    Pixar

I've always admired Pixar films for being more sophisticated than the standard Disney fare. Pixar has gone out of their way to repeatedly raise the bar for family entertainment, and show time and again how smart story-telling can be done, and can be done well, for a kid's movie. While I have always preferred Pixar to Disney (luckily, my family has as well so Pixar would be played more often than Disney), I've only recently come to appreciate and enjoy them to the magnitude that I do. I would say they're some of my favorite films. Pixar is to thank for the relatively recent quality boost in children's entertainment in film. Studios are finally being forced to come to Pixar's level to compete, and perhaps most noticeably, Frozen is very clearly a product of Pixar's influence on the industry.

So, what are your favorite Pixar films?

Mine are The Incredibles, Up, and Monsters University.

On a surface level, The Incredibles is about superheros. And that's awesome. But what I really appreciate about the film is that it says so much regarding children's upbringing, their entertainment, and how these two things are so closely connected. I think the film has only become more relevant with what it says on celebrating mediocrity and protecting children from violence. I don't think The Incredibles will stop being relevant for a long time; it truly is a timeless film.

Up is beautiful. Plain and Simple.

Maybe it's because I saw Monsters University the summer before starting college, maybe it's because its themes are something I gravitate towards, I don't know, but Monsters University hit me in a place and immediately became one of my favorites. And gdi Monsters U is freaking gorgeous to look at. Pixar films have always been really pretty but this one. Oh man.

WALL-E and all of the Tory Story films get honorable mentions because I love them, though not quite as much as those three. But honestly, there's not a Pixar films that I've seen that I haven't liked.

I still have not seen Brave, Cars 2, or the entirety of Ratatouille. I need to, I know.

I was reluctant to place this in the Disney section, since Pixar and Disney are two very different things in my head and demand distinction, but I guess I have to. ugh.

illustrates why Btas' Joker is my favorite Joker.

Dangerously insane, yet hilariously entertaining. He has so much personality and is so expressive, yet you never know what's going on in his head. And as much praise as the voice gets, it's totally deserved and I don't think you can exaggerate how much life he brought to the character. And Siskel said he didn't like this Joker and preferred the 89 Joker. pfft

It's also a perfect example of why I love Btas and Mask of the Phantasm so much. Images of that futuristic Art Deco city theme park (which was also the basis for Gotham minus the future stuff), specifically the flashbacks, always stuck with me as a kid.

    now back to the movie
