They are not essentially the same at all. SMTIV is completely different from Persona 4. Battle mechanics are...eh, somewhat similar. Although if you like the anime I would recommend getting Persona 3 or Persona 4, the games, assuming you have a PS2/PS3/PSP/PSVita.
