Landlord Places "Whites Only" Sign at Duplex Pool

Michael Gunn said he was so upset when he saw his landlord's poolside "White Only" sign that he believes was aimed at his black daughter that he could not remain living at the Cincinnati duplex. Gunn testified Friday at an Ohio Civil Rights Commission hearing in Cincinnati that the sign at the duplex where he rented an apartment cost his family emotionally and financially. The hearing was held to consider penalties that could include punitive and compensatory damages against Gunn's former landlord. claimed that the 10-year-old girl's hair products clouded the pool, discriminated against the child. The commission ruled that Hein, who is white, violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act by posting the sign. Hein did not attend Friday's hearing, and a recording said her voicemail was full. The state has said Hein gave up her right to challenge the discrimination ruling by failing to respond to earlier case filings. A ruling from the administrative law judge who heard the case Friday is not expected for months. Gunn said his daughter lives with her mother but often visits him and had gone swimming in the pool on Memorial Day weekend in 2011. He said Hein sent him a text message shortly afterward, accusing his daughter of clouding the pool and saying she would have to shower before entering it and wear a swim cap. A few days after that, Gunn said he went to the pool and saw the iron sign stating "Public Swimming Pool, White Only." Gunn, who is white, said he was so angry his hands were shaking. "It's something you're supposed to see in history books," Gunn said. "It's not something you're supposed to see posted at the building where you live." He determined he had to move to protect his daughter and was not about to let her see the sign or risk having Hein upset her. "I did not want her to think that there were people like this or have her think that just because she wasn't white, people would think less of her," he told the administrative law judge. Gunn also testified that he incurred costs from moving, lost work time and higher rent in addition to the emotional stress, but said his primary concern was his daughter. "She shouldn't have to think about the color of her skin in relation to what people think about her," he said. Elizabeth Brown, executive director of Housing Opportunities Made Equal, also testified — mostly about the impact on the racially diverse community. The nonprofit fair housing agency in Cincinnati helped Gunn file his complaint. "It's not just a personal issue," Brown said. "Cincinnati has had problems in the past and has worked hard to change its image into a welcoming and inclusive city. An outrageous action like this is another hit on the city's reputation." Cincinnati was the scene of race riots in April 2001 when police and demonstrators clashed following the shooting of a black suspect by police. Civil Rights Section Chief Lori Anthony with the Ohio Attorney General's Office told the judge that damages are being sought "to send a clear message that racial discrimination in housing will not be tolerated." The judge did not indicate when she would rule.

Smallest turtle ever hatched

This minuscule turtle is a big hit on the Internet, proving the "small equals cute" equation true yet again. The mini musk turtle weighs only 0.03 ounces and is the smallest turtle ever hatched at Pacific Northwest Turtleworks in Kenmore, Wash. Her proud mom and dad are three and two inches long respectively, so time will tell if junior will catch up. Pacific Northwest Turtleworks is looking for name suggestions for the little miss, who at the moment is going by the moniker of "Indy," on account of hatching on July 4. The top-rating suggestion currently on their Facebook Page is Yoda.

Lifeguard gets bill after ocean rescue

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Seventeen-year-old John Clark, a senior at Hudson's Bay, says he didn't think twice about running into the ocean to save a drowning 12-year-old. But what he hasn't stopped thinking about, is the bill he received as a result of his effort. The guardian angel is busy this week teaching Boy Scouts to tie knots. It's a far cry from the sand at Rockaway Beach nearly a month ago -- when John Clark heard screams for help from a 12-year-old swept out to sea.The call for help came just five days after Clark had been certified as a lifeguard." He had to do something," said Dan Clark, John's dad .So John Clark dove in -- through the breakers and heavy swells -- to reach the boy in the ocean. Then he calmed the boy down, and kept him afloat."I don't know exactly how big the swells were," Clark said, "but they were big enough to push both of us underwater -- all the way down to where we were touching sand." Jet skis arrived and pulled both of them to shore. John had a headache, and the 12-year-old was wrapped in a blanket to warm up. Into the ambulance they both went. Clark thought the trip to Tillamook General Hospital was standard procedure; he didn't give it a second thought until several weeks later ... when the bill arrived." I am extremely proud of him," his dad tells KOIN. "When we got the bill it was a shock." The emergency room bill came to $449. The physician's bill was $227. The 15-mile ride in the ambulance to Tillamook: $1,907. The total bill for saving a young man's life? Nearly $2,600." I had a feeling there would be a bill," Clark said. "But I didn't know how much it would be, and I kind of feel bad for the fact that it's so expensive. But I couldn't just let the kid go -- I had to do something."John Clark is a lifeguard at the Firstenburg Community Center pool and the Marshall Community Center in Vancouver. He's the youngest of nine kids; his family is trying to make arrangements to get the bill paid.

Poor guy didn't need to get the bill. They should have figured something out, considering the circumstances. He'll probably get a ton of donations, though.

Obama authorized covert support for Syrian rebels, sources say

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama has signed a covert directive authorizing U.S. support for Syrian rebels battling President Bashar al-Assad's forces, U.S. officials told CNN on Wednesday. The secret order, referred to as an intelligence "finding," allows for clandestine support by the CIA and other agencies. It was unclear when the president signed the authorization for Syria, but the sources said it was within the past several months.The Obama administration has said it will step up its assistance to the opposition in the wake of last month's failure by the U.N. Security Council to agree on tougher sanctions against al-Assad's regime. Exactly what type of support the finding authorizes is also unclear. The Obama administration has ruled out arming the rebels for now, providing only nonlethal assistance, such as communications equipment. Last week, the U.S. Treasury Department approved a license allowing the Washington Syrian Support Group to provide direct financial assistance to the Free Syrian Army. The Washington-based representative of the Free Syrian Army is allowed to conduct financial transactions on the rebel group's behalf but is not allowed to send military equipment. During the war in Libya, Obama signed a similar directive authorizing covert assistance for rebels in the battle against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The Obama administration has resisted arming the opposition, in part, because U.S. officials don't know enough about the rebels. U.S. officials have told CNN that Washington is cooperating with countries that are arming the rebels, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to help find groups worthy of aid. Diplomatic sources have also said the United States is providing intelligence on Syrian troop movements, which is then passed to rebel groups. Foreign policy experts on Wednesday urged the Obama administration to increase its support of the armed opposition. Testifying before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Andrew Tabler of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy argued the United States should start arming the Syrian opposition, but only under the right conditions." At this point, given the direction of the conflict, I think that what we need to do is assess which groups could we and should we arm at what point, and make that decision," Tabler told the Senate panel. "I think that we're actually at that decision, given where the conflict is going." James Dobbins of the Rand Corporation agreed." The time has come to consider and pick those groups that are most consistent with our interest and our vision for the future and begin to advantage them in terms of the internal politics, by providing assistance, including perhaps money as well as arms and advice," Dobbins said. Martin Indyk, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel now with the Brookings Institution, recommended arming the opposition, but in a "wise way." "We need to do it in a way that, first of all, we understand who we're supporting and what their intentions are," Indyk said. The State Department said Wednesday the United States has set aside $25 million for "nonlethal" assistance to the Syrian opposition, with another $64 million in humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people. The humanitarian aid, which includes funding for the World Food Programme, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other aid agencies, helps support the tens of thousands of refugees streaming across Syria's borders to neighboring Turkey and Jordan.

Amazing photo: 'Fire rainbow' is stunner

So-called "fire rainbows" are neither on fire nor are they rainbows, but they sure are stunning.They are technically known as iridescent clouds, a relatively rare phenomenon caused by clouds of water droplets of nearly uniform size, according to a release by NASA. These clouds diffract, or bend, light in a similar manner, which separates out light into different wavelengths, or colors.That makes them similar to rainbow-colored glories, which are also formed by diffraction, and also produce an oscillating pattern of colors ranging from blue to green to red to purple and back to blue again. Although iridescent clouds have rainbow-like colors, the way light is scattered to produce them is slightly different. Rainbows are formed by refraction and reflection. When light is refracted, it is bent by passing through mediums of different densities, such as water or a prism. Reflected light bounces off a surface at an angle equal to the angle it hit the surface at. Diffraction, though, involves light waves being scattered into a ring-like pattern.As with other iridescent objects, like peacock feathers, the color changes depending upon one's position relative to the sun and the object. Iridescence usually occurs in newly formed clouds. That appears to be the case here as well. According to the Weather Channel, these are pileus clouds caused by a fast-growing thunderstorm that shoved air into the upper atmosphere through a layer of moisture. This created a fog-like cloud that looks like a glowing dome atop the thunderstorm.Iridescent clouds are not to be confused with circumhorizontal arcs, which form bands of color parallel to the horizon.The phenomenon was captured in a photo taken on July 31 in the clouds over South Florida.

Spanish water polo player's breast exposed on live TV

NBC has experienced problems trying to run the Olympics on tape delay, and now we're seeing that they're encountering problems running things live. At one point during the Spain-US women's water polo match on Tuesday, a Spanish player's swimsuit was pulled, leaving her breast exposed. The shot was noticed by many viewers and began circulating online. An NBC commentator says it was Kami Craig who grabbed the suit and exposed the breast. She had four goals in the 9-9 tie.This sort of wardrobe malfunction is nothing new in water polo. The play is so rough that participants will often do anything and grab anything to gain better position while struggling in the water. Sometimes private parts end up exposed. It's just too bad the Spanish player didn't have her other arm free so that she could pull a Venus Williams.
