I have three ideas about it: 1) Way to Dawn and Soul Eater aren't actually the same blade. Soul Eater was just a psuedo-keyblade that Riku acquired from Maleficent in order to fight after he lost the rights to the keyblade (originally supposed to weild the Kingdom Key, but lost it to Sora when he opened the Door on Destiny Islands and accepted the darkness of Xehanort's Heartless). When his heart had become pure enough again (after he had proved himself worthy to the Light and helped Sora and Kairi enough) he was able to weild the Way to Dawn, being the only one of the three left, without knowing of the switch. 2) Following the same story as above, the Keyblade rejected Riku because of his darkness, and the Kingdom Key went to Sora. But because he was destined to become a Keybearer, the Way to Dawn altered its form (either of its own volition or because of some altering by its previous owner) and became the Soul Eater. Then, when he became able to weild the Keyblade again, the Soul Eater reverted back to normal. 3) Soul Eater was just a powerful blade holding the power of darkness that Maleficent had and gave to Riku to do her bidding, completely separate of the Way to Dawn. Then, as stated in the above two stories, when Riku's heart was able to weild a keyblade, he was able to alter its form into the Keyblade, creating two separate Way to Dawn blades. Just theories.
