They must have been concentrating into something that connected them into their element. Xehanort, since there was nothing in hes heart, he got nothingness, Braig, by having studies of the cosmos, got space, Dilan, by studying the wind, he got wind, Even, by having cold attitude he got ice, Aeleus, by being old and hard as rock, he got it and Ienzo for being a book worm, he got hes thats none!
