I didn't really watch past TOM 3, so :c . I quit watching TV after I moved in '07, so that was probably why. I still remember being kind of freaked out when Spoiler TOM 1 died, though.

Nope, CRTs supposedly give better pictures than many HDTVs (I think LCDs in particular?), the problem is that they're too big and clunky to get with large screen sizes. Plus it's dependent upon the SD/HD factor, anyway.
There are several lens flares during the first Twilight Town segment of the game, IIRC, so it's possible -- especially since the placement couldn't be more unnatural.
