    AFI

    A Fire Inside

    Any AFI fans here?

Burials is my favorite AFI album. When I first listened to Crash Love I didn't like it, thought it was kinda bland, but man was I wrong. Crash Love is great. Decemberunderground is alright, if not a little disjointed. There are some songs that seem very out of place and detract from the atmosphere of the record, something AFI normally does masterfully. I still can't get into Sing the Sorrow that much. I may come around to it like I did with Crash Love, though. Before this past year, I only listened to Burials and December and a little Art of Drowning, but I've since been listening to a lot of their older stuff as well and really liking it. What's more, David is a great personality and one of my very favorite people in music. I have immense admiration for the ideals he openly subscribes to. (It's also very cool that he was an English major.) Great band all around.

    reconnecting

spam zones gettin kinda real for a second pls just bear with it

I heard something in one of my classes the other day that encouraged me to be a little more proactive in establishing/reconnecting friendships. I got in touch with my old best friend and we're gonna meet up and try to do some catching up and stuff. It was one of those friendships where you peg it as the one you have your entire life, but parent stuff intervened and we drifted apart. I was all excited to try and begin rebuilding this oldest, closest friendship because I was starting to get a little tired with having only one real close friend irl, but when we were talking for the first time in years he mentioned that he's trying to move to another state. So now I'm all bummed out. I was hoping to have the friend who influenced my tastes so much back, he introduced me to comics and kh, and have someone else to talk to sometimes. I mean I know we're like adults and **** now and living different lives but I would be remiss in not trying to patch things up, I thought. but now it feels like what's the point

this got a little more real than i was expecting. i feel like help with life is reserved for questions and i'm not looking for help so much as just... expositing. so yeah. i don't know. will prob regret this in the morning. did you know i'm breeding roserade for the second time because **** me egg moves and ivs? no, you didn't.

Only other thread I saw is long dead so I'm making another. Plus there's an occasion.

    They've finally returned.
    http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3309345/breaking-benjamin-announces-return/

It's honestly a little surreal for me. I had come to the place in my mind where I assumed they would never be back after all of the legal trouble and there being no news for so long even after it was settled. I'm indescribably excited.

However because of the entirely different lineup minus Ben, I'm both anxious about and excited for the future of the band. Given that Ben is the primary song-writer I doubt their music will be affected too much, though it's still very sad that the other guys are gone.

Can't wait to finally be getting new stuff from one of my long-time favorite bands again.

but im going to defend man of steel. again. I heard someone say something interesting in defense of the movie so naturally im going to adopt it as my own and give zero credit.

Someone described Man of Steel as being an alternate universe Superman. The movie assumes you already know who Superman is and how he operates, because you do, and takes a different approach to classic ideas and tropes because you're expected to know that this is different and not the real, default Superman. The problem is that it's a movie and will be treated as the Superman for years to come, and not a comic that is separate from an ongoing continuity and free to do whatever it wants. It's hardly an accessible film because people have certain ideas of what Superman is, but they might not realize that these ideas are largely influenced by the older movie franchise, and perhaps not the "source material" (I'm not comfortable saying that regarding comics but you get the point), and that Superman stories in the "source material" are at times a very different thing than what they might expect. Did you know that Superman comics are pretty hard science fiction stories? How much the sci fi is emphasized varies depending on the run, but at their core, Superman stories are science fiction stories and Man of Steel plays this element up more than any Superman movie or show before it, which could alienate some viewers. I also take issue with people saying it's a "dark" film. They're not wholly wrong, but I think they overlook how optimistic the film ultimately is and are either not understanding or are ignoring that this is a Superman who has yet to fully develop his mo. (And I would say Returns is darker in places anyway and is not even close to being as optimistic. Not that I dislike Returns.) I'm inclined to think that people who don't like this movie see a very different movie than people who do like it. I think the people who don't like it see it as an extension of the trend to make characters all dark and gritty and joyless, and perhaps there is some of that here, but that's not what I see at all. What I see is a classic sci-fi alien invasion movie that attempts to explore an iconic character in a way that's never been done on screen and give credence to why he is the way he is. I love it. You don't have to.

also im only talking about ideas and certain story elements. im not talking about storytelling or filmmaking.

i've been in a really big superman kick lately so that's why this thread exists.
and it makes me sad seeing people trash this movie.
