Very rarely should you select a preset low, medium or high setting. If you only use 2x antialiasing and turn down shadows, you can run games much better than you think. For example, Fallout III's high settings used 8x anti-aliasing, which is a huge performance hit. Turn that down and you'd be fine. The biggest performance killers are anti-aliasing, shadows, SSAO and texture size.

I don't think we'll ever see a major breakthrough until the graphics improve significantly. Games are still too uncanny valley right now. It's probably the worst it's ever been, with the exception of L.A. Noire.
