[IMG]If you read this, it’s possible that like me, you are the owner of a PSVita. Maybe, like me, you were trying to be cheap, and got a 4GB memory card to go with it. Or maybe you’re super rich and got yourself a 32GB version, the best one can get with Sony’s Vita in those days of 50GB Movies and 3TB hard drives.

Maybe, like me, you realized the horrible truth fairly quickly: the average AAA title on the PSP was 500MB, while on the Vita, the average is at 1.5GB, with superstar games such as Uncharted going up to 3.5GB. Maybe, because you’re stupid like me, you thought going digital was a nice idea, and you found yourself cornered with your memory stick full of games less than 2 weeks after buying your Playstation Vita, with no room left to even copy a music album.

Oh, silly you and your first world problems, don’t cry: if you have too many games, you can easily delete them to make room, and since Sony allows you to re-download your purchased games from their services free of charge, you’ll be able to get them back whenever you want…

But imagine for one moment that Sony’s servers go down for a long period of time, either because of a technical issue, or due to business decisions (sarcastic details below on why this is not an unlikely scenario) :

You’re facing a situation where, if Sony’s servers get shut down at some point, whatever games are currently on your memory stick will be the only ones you can play ever again.

Some people will pretend that this is a general problem with digital downloads, not with the Vita in particular. This is incorrect. For example, the PSP has digital downloads too, but you can copy them as much as you want to your own hard drive, then copy them back to the PSP. This will work as long as you don’t mess with the PSP’s licenses for each game. (And I could also explain how the humble bundle digital downloads work DRM free, but that would be a low blow)

So, why not use the backup functionality of the PS Vita to do the same then? Well, I’m glad you ask, since this is where I was going: the only way to copy files back and forth between your Vita and your PC is through CMA, a tool which requires your PC to be connected to Sony’s servers constantly while you use it. At this point I assume you understand where I’m going: in a scenario where Sony’s servers are down for whatever reason, you can’t copy anything from and to your Vita, because the only tool to do that won’t let you. This, among other things, renders all your backups useless, and basically means whatever is not on your memory stick right now will never be able to run on your Vita ever again.

Yes, this is nothing new, it just hit me like lightning the other day, as I was asking myself “why do I hate the concept of CMA so much?”.

But hey, who am I fooling, there’s no chance in hell Sony’s servers will ever go down [Warning: sarcasm ahead]. It’s not like they’ve been in a bad financial shape for the past 4 years, or if they’ve ever had their PSN servers hacked and taken down for a long period of time, or if they have been closing many network game servers recently to reduce costs… And the Vita is doing such awesome sales so far, there’s no risk Sony will ever try to cut their loss on this device.

And even if that ever happened, come on, with a 32GB card, you can store up to 10 Vita games, and who has ever bought more than 10 games for a console, right? And those who do won’t mind spitting an additional $100 for a memory stick every time they run out of space, I’m sure. It’s not like Vita games are expensive anyway.

By the way, I digress, but this echoes one thing I’ve been saying for a while: digital games on the Vita should be much cheaper than the physical version. It’s only natural since storing them on a memory stick costs about $15 (average cost for 3GB on a Sony memory stick – by comparison the same costs about $2.5 on a sdcard), a 30% cost increase which is absorbed in the case of a physical purchase because you don’t have to pay for the storage.

No, unlike what the image at the top of the article seemed to imply, I am not coming with a terrifying revelation on how all the Vitas in the world will stop working if Sony’s systems ever go down. But I’m just realizing more strongly how we are not buying games anymore, we’re merely renting them, and the system is already in place to make sure it will not be easy to claim ownership of the digital products we bought, if something bad ever happens to Sony. Don’t you love how today, you can fire up your old Dreamcast, and it tells you you can’t play games because it can’t find a connection to Sega’s servers?

So, do you trust Sony’s servers that keep your Vita alive will still be here in 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? Would you rather stick to physical games? Or will you buy a new memory stick every time you download a new game? Do you expect Sony would release a “patch” to let you retrieve your backups with CMA, if they ever go bankrupt?

I don't really have much to say about this now, but I'm definitely going to try and stick to physical games from now on until Sony gets around to fixing this. That said, I will probably keep using digital downloads for my PSP and PS1 games, but that's only because I have no other choice.

On one hand, she rejected me. On the other hand, she told me straight up that she is not interested in romantic relationships with anyone right now. Not only does that mean that I still have a chance with her, it also means that her reason for rejecting me has nothing to do with me.

Ladies, take notes. This is the best way to reject any guy. You have to be direct about it. As soon as you notice that he might be interested in you, let him know that you are not interested in him. Do not beat around the bush until you've friendzoned him and he's fallen madly in love with you. GETTING A GODDAMN BAND-AID RIPPED OFF YOUR SKIN IS A HELL OF A LOT LESS PAINFUL THAN HAVING YOUR HEART CRUSHED INTO A MILLION TINY PIECES. SEE FIGURE A.

^Figure A. ARE YOU SEEING THIS? THIS IS HOW YOU REJECT A GUY.

    Ahem.

As many of you know, I met a really great girl at a con last weekend. I really like her and would like to pursue a relationship with her, but I don't know how to go about it.

I met her at a couple of panels before seeing her at a ball that the con was hosting. I intended to start a conversation and try to ask her to dance from there, but she misheard my first sentence as asking her to dance and I just sort of went with it. We waited for a slow song while we talked all about Ace Attorney and the various nerdy things that we liked and then danced while we talked some more. After that first dance, we went to the con's game room and played around on Persona 4 Arena before heading back for one last two-song dance. After the ball ended, we swapped phone numbers and searched for the guy who I was originally at the con with, only to be met with miserable failure. Eventually, she went to her hotel with her group while I, having no place to sleep, stayed at the con and went to panels all night and morning.

After the longest ten hours of my life, I went to the Nobuo Uematsu panel, video recorded it, and got his autograph (squee!). I waited for an hour after that and called the girl that I've been going on about for over 1000 characters to let her know that I would be waiting for her in the game room. I got her voicemail, left my message, and hung up. My phone had to be off except for that, though (low battery), so I didn't get her phone call from five minutes beforehand. She met me at the game room and all was fine, though. After a few matches in Persona 4 Arena, we headed to the food court where she bought herself some fries and allowed me to take a few. On the way there, we ran into one of her friends and I just sort of stood there while they caught up. After the foodcourt, all three of us headed back down to the game room where my new friend and her old friend played more of P4A together. After a little while, I asked if I could rest my head on her shoulder and, knowing that I had pulled an all-nighter, she let me do just that. I fell asleep for periods of a few minutes at a time while she watched and played some P4A matches. After that we just sort of walked around the con until she had to leave with her group, and at that point I stayed with her friend because I had nobody else to be with at the time. Since then, I've sent her one text message to let her know what my e-mail address is and ask her to call me sometime. I have yet to receive any kind of reply. I'm nervous about calling her myself because she works five days a week and I don't know what hours she's free. She's also moving next Monday and will be packing all weekend, which means she won't be free any time soon. She'll back for winter break and some time in January, though.

So basically, how should I proceed from here and, if you've read the other details, have I been doing alright so far?

This is highlight of my whole collection of photos. There was a charity auction early in Nobuo Uematsu's Q&A panel to raise money for cancer. He saw how dedicated everyone was to the cause, so he donated this beauty. He used it to purify the spiritual energies in hotel rooms. It is one hundred percent one of a kind, and I got the only photo of it before they said not to take photos. It fetched a good $400, too. Whoever got it is super lucky and deserves to be punched in the face for having more money than me.

But that got screwed up so I'm just gonna tell you my five big highlights.

    1. NOBUO UEMATSU! He made a HUGE announcement at the Distant Worlds concert that I can't tell you because it's actually kind of a leak. The only reason told us is because we were the best audience he's had in his whole Distant Worlds run. Wait for the 25th Anniversary concert for the official announcement. You're going to look back on this thread and think I'm awesome for just telling you guys this. Oh, and I got his autograph.

    2. I think I've made a semi-famous friend. After I met her at her first autograph signing, Cheremi Leigh recognized and said hi to me a couple times when I passed by her other two signings. And she wants to go to Ohayocon, so I might even see her there too!

    3. Doug Walker accepted my gift of pears at his autograph signing.

    4. Three people recognized my Mr. Ono cosplay without needing to be told, and several others loved it once I did tell them. It was the first Mr. Ono cosplay that anyone who recognized it had seen, which makes me think that it might be the first one of all time. I was even offered a spot in leading the Persona panel at Ohayocon. Naturally, I accepted because this one needed a lot more Sengoku era.

    5. OH MY GOD YOU GUYS I MET A REALLY AWESOME GIRL! She's funny, nice, smart, sweet, and we have a lot in common! On top of all that, I think I might have a chance with her! I don't believe in love at first sight, but I was falling for her by the end of our first conversation. I would say that I was her date to the Heroes Ball, but we just sort of saw each other there and danced (terribly) to a couple songs. She even took the lead without needing me to be incredibly awkward and ask her to. We spent most of Sunday together too and played a bunch of Persona 4 Arena. And I actually might have a chance with her too! We've got so much in common and it seems like she likes me too. She even let me sleep on her shoulder because I pulled an all nighter between Saturday and Sunday and she was the one who suggested that we swap phone numbers. Unfortunately, she's leaving or Chicago pretty soon, but she'll be back for Winter Break and Ohayocon, so I'll be able to try and see her during those two time periods. Oh my god you guys I'm so happy.

And the Ultima Weapon is not the best weapon in the game. What the hell, Nomura? It's supposed to be best! It's the Ultima Weapon. It's right there in the name. It's the last weapon you'll need to equip. That's what the word "ultimate" and its various derivatives means. Final. Last. So why is the Keyblade that I have equipped better than the Keyblade I just got? I am sickened.
