Chronicle did not do the same thing. Not even close. The dark themes and apocalyptic imagery of Akira were a mirror of the effect Japan suffered from having two nukes dropped on them. The "kids with powers" plot is really just a thin frame over a much deeper story about hubris, fatalism, and individual people wrestling with their own powerlessness and the futility of their struggles.

Not to mention, it was one of the first pieces of Japanese animation not to cut corners. The animation was full-body, the dialogue was pre-scored, and the backdrops were fully realized, long before such became common - and even today it still looks lovely, barring the odd facial movements at times. The directing was top-notch for the time and it has aged well.

tl;dr people think Akira is great because it is great. It's Evangelion for people with more than half a brain.

I wish I could celebrate, but I look at these numbers and think "Great, as if Sony and Microsoft's heads weren't swollen enough." Juuuust waiting for them to start shoehorning in some of that DRM again...

    Skullgirls

SO UH JUST FYI IF ANYBODY OWNS THIS FOR PS3 OR 360... YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE IT MUCH LONGER.

Just heard this on the official stream, there should be an archive up as of a few minutes ago. MikeZ just said that Konami "requested" Sony pull Skullgirls from PSN, due to the dev team severing ties with them. And Sony said yes. Microsoft is also doing this because ????. He has no idea if people who already own it will still have it afterward or if netplay will work at all. The team is doubling their efforts to get the new build up and running, which means hopefully they will return under new publishers by the next year. Sony has allegedly pledged that re-purchase will not be necessary, but there's also no precedent for this event at all, so who knows how it's gonna go down.

Being the loveable guy he is, MikeZ's calling for peace and that no one go around slandering Konami, Sony, or anyone else over it. Even so... man, this just reeks. Whether they're legally in the right or not. Even Mike compared it to an FF boss's dying attack. I'm just glad I got it for PC so I can continue to play and support the game through this mess. Though there is an upshot: Because of this, we may get the patch sooner than ever, which means all the new characters are aaaall the closer. :L

Yep. Story goes they like Bosch for the same reason we like Jun Fukuyama: Not as goofy and overdramatic as their native speaker. I have a feeling it's not the only case in history. Any rate, it's just hearsay, so maybe it's been blown out of proportion. I just find it funny when the U.S. likes Japanese things more than the Japanese do.

I'm sure, but in my experience you don't have to do much to impress the kiddies. I'll admit, when I played FFVII as a young 'un I had no idea what I was doing, I just put the shinies on the guys and then they did the things, but it was still cool. I still made it through. I wish we could have our cake and eat it too, not constantly have to bite the dumbing-down that devs think kids need and adults don't mind just so the game will sell. But this is digressing, and I've ranted enough about it. I think SE should know that their choice of reveal seems weird to us, but I also think they should be given time to show more of the game before we make a judgment call.
