So am I the only one who thought of this Platinum?

    "Yes Nova"

    WELL FUCK Y'ALL THEN

Also for its own sake I'd like to point out a few hypocrisies I observed

Here we have an accusation of ignorance

    ...and here, an expression thereof

Would you call yourself a mindless KH junkie? No? Do you think yourself unable to rate it fairly? And what do you think of some of the other users here? Now, having answered all those to yourself: Are we not all part of the community? Did not the majority of us come here because we enjoy Kingdom Hearts?

Food for thought. NOW LET'S MOVE ON

    Ok, that sounds fair

Little snippy but still logically sound

    Whoa whoa wHOA WHAT

Now you yourself did the honors in pointing out the flaws in my colleague's argument, so I won't bother - but suffice it to say all I see in this exchange (and, in fact, in most arguments between you two) is two people dismissing what's inconvenient to their argument and glorifying what's convenient.

Frankly I think you're both wrong, but that's hardly relevant. If y'all are going to be wrong, you could at least be wrong with style ;o

Regardless, you must realize it's primarily a personal hangup. Unless it's apparent that it was a popularity casting, and even then you never know.

    Dude. AURON'S LIPS.

The improvement is noticeable, especially since my roomie just replayed the original and I have it fresh in my mind. I really want them to do more than just touch up the faces though, 'cause some of the lip/jaw movements were severely awk. I dunno how much that is to ask of them, but since they've made similar changes to KH1.5 it can't be that hard.

    HI I'M BACK

    Bought the Japanese version

    It's so godlike

Azrael is everything I hoped he'd be ; u; And Terumi is ridiculously fun. Imagine if Hazama traded all of his range for command grabs and meter drain. And also if he went full slasher villain and RAKED HIS KNIFE ACROSS THE GROUND AS HE RAN. (Yes he does run.)

Also: KOKONOE'S GONNA BE PLAYABLE. I still have a bit left of that mysterious currency known as HONG KONG DOLLARS, so hopefully I'll be able to take her for a spin when she's released and relay the deets. In the meantime if anybody wants to know anything (that a non-Japanese speaker or reader could figure out by blindly stumbling through game modes), lemme know and I'll see what I can dig up.

    I... disagree but go on

I think you're giving action games a lil' too much credit considering the trend is just as prevalent and just as problematic there. Hell, Squeenix should know this from their work with RPGs, as they've made some brilliant bosses before without falling back on the "Kill someone every turn" strategy. Like pretty much every boss from FFX :L And even in Final Mix, Xemnas is a brilliant boss who really doesn't hit much harder than Sephiroth. What makes him difficult is that he's extremely aggressive, he reacts to your attacks, his own attacks have unique properties - Some of them linger, some have great tracking or an odd rhythm to them - and he can induce panic in the player by changing the conditions of the fight (Although why they felt the need to make the Release command lightning-fast and random is beyond me).

Like everything else in the KH series - and in the Final Fantasy series while I'm at it - it seems like they just up and forgot what made the games so great. I don't know if it was a massive changing of the guard, or foisting the design duties onto different teams, or what, but their work up to a certain point is the work of veterans who know what they're doing, while everything beyond the threshold bears the mark of greenhorns who've never made a solid game in their life. It's not about what genre they're working in, it's about what they know and what they've learned.

At any rate, RPGs didn't traditionally have difficulty levels except for those the player themselves implemented, by choosing to level grind more or less. Meanwhile action games have had them since time immemorial, and the only ones I can name off the top of my head that don't fall into the "Make everything IK on Hard" pitfall are the Arkham games.

See I feel the same way; a dub is never going to perfectly capture the essence of the work in its original language

    if the translation is plain

However I believe it is entirely possible to recreate the experience in a way that any audience can understand, and not to the detriment of the work in question

Exhibit A: FLCL, a dub which by any standard was essentially "butchered," but ended up brilliant as a result and is still fondly remembered by all and preferred in English by many - and not just the lowest common denominator. It is actually written in such a way as to effectively convey its message without wasting space or saying too much, a feat which is only possible because the translation is loose rather than precise; and while it is a shame to lose the many references to Japanese culture, they are replaced by references of roughly equal value, some just as obscure as their counterparts (SERIOUSLY I JUST FIGURED OUT WHAT THAT FUCKIN' SEVEN OF NINE BIT WAS ABOUT) and which an American viewer can identify with. More importantly, the original still exists for those who would rather have it, and more people will find out about it in the end

No dub should seek to recreate the experience of the original, because that experience already exists and trying to outdo it is more of an insult than an homage; however there absolutely is merit to the idea of making a work not more accessible, but more inclusive, for audiences naturally unable to understand the finer points due to language barriers. Ideally there should be no dumbing down, but merely an exchange of one nuance for another. That and some people may not have trouble reading subtitles or even learning different languages, but the latter is an extreme investment of time at best and both can be difficult on a sheer physical level for certain people; e.g. my mother gets headaches when she tries to watch subtitled movies and has difficulty sitting through them despite enjoying the few she's seen

    *SICK ELECTRO-RIFF*

    That's kinda the issue though

It pretends you do have that freedom, but is unable to deliver

for perfectly valid reasons, granted, but it becomes misdirection in the end, which is uncool and makes players feel had
