I'm biased for Growlanser and against Dragon Quest, but I think you should get Final Fantasy VII. ...I know, it makes no sense. Just go with it.
Which is funny because he apparently said he was tired of looking at the old one. Personally I vastly prefer 8x16bit sprites to lowres art renders, especially when they both behave the same. Can't explain why but the latter always looks less polished to me. Maybe it's because of its roots in Flash, which has been wholly populated by sloppy, barely-functional games for the longest time. I like the last one the best. It combines intricate detail with strictness of form, while the others feel too much like sprites trying not to be sprites. Plus the proportions on the last one are closest to the original, if not necessarily the overall appearance.
I'm with Ash. I wouldn't even use the guns, just abuse the living Hel out of the space powers. Plus since he's SMOKIN' THE NORT he probably has many more powers at his disposal now.

Kairi. Based strictly on his series appearances, Lea has never truly had an uphill battle. Kairi's proved her mettle, and being a Princess of Heart means she'll likely have an extreme propensity for light magic, which will probably put her ahead of Lea. He has fire, sure, but light is probably stronger. It may be that Lea starts off stronger, more skilled, and more experienced, but I think Kairi's potential for growth is greater.
