I'm not so sure about that one... From an evolutionary perspective, selection would favor the child who was raised and educated by both parents, since s/he would be well-rounded and better equipped to survive. I can't imagine a behavior like that surviving so long solely based on evolutionary principles, much less being par for the course for that reason. It's a similar argument, though a far less drastic version of it, that is used to explain the behavior of rapists; but most rapists don't stick around to see if a kid is born and take care of it, and if there is a child, that child likely has monetary troubles and a lacking education to deal with, putting him/her at a disadvantage from other children. If we'd been on like that since time immemorial, I can scarcely imagine we'd be facing overpopulation troubles at this stage.
