He's a superior, but that alone doesn't make him their king. The Organization are just Nobodies; barring their agency, there's nothing special about them. They're intelligent, and with intelligence they command obedience, but it's not a royal heritage. It's just not enough to explain how specific the comment was. Why not "commander?" Or "superior," that one seems popular.

Furthermore, why is this the only time we hear a Nobody talk? Why to Roxas? And at all times, in the middle of a retrieval? Why would they bother? They have their orders. Why reach out to him? Were they told to help Axel get through to him? What could a Dusk possibly do to help?

At worst, closing the door was incidental to the presence of one light and one dark Keyblade, but that doesn't affect the argument that the Kingdom Keys serve another, unique purpose.

We're assuming an exception before it's proven itself. Sora's an anomaly in a lot of ways, but no signs point to that one.

So are we assuming when they awaken Ventus in KHIII, Sora's gonna lose the Keyblade? That'll bite.

I'm asking by what ceremony Sora gained his ability. If this is a prerequisite, when did it happen in his case? And if only Masters can perform the ceremony, for that matter, how did Terra give Riku the ability? He wasn't a Master!

Or being really weird and breaking all the rules, evidently. :L

In that case I think Nomura's telling us how it should be. He's giving us the rules Ansem would have written down, as an example.

I really want people to stop saying 3D Sonic can't work and I really really want this to be the game that makes them stop

Ugh, it really does look like a ton of fun. And I'm glad that at least the level we've seen isn't designed to be blown through at non-stop break-neck speed; that was one of my only issues with Sonic Generations. It's nice in small doses, but it's nicer when you have to earn it by deftly navigating the environment and maintaining momentum through different obstacles.

    I know I just

    *sigh*

I wish it had been a lie it's too dumb to be true

If this is confirmed in an interview or Ultimania somewhere, I'll buy it. Otherwise, what makes you so sure?

Which is weird, because isn't Roxas the one who lost it at one point? ...Oh wait, maybe they both did at different points in time. Idk as much as I liked Days it was really weird.

Well there you have it. Two of them existed at once; no keychains up my sleeves.

So what are we calling a ceremony for Sora? The ethereal equivalent of a homeless friend asking if he can room with you for a couple of months? Once again: Not buying it. The ceremony is something Nomura invented for Birth by Sleep, and if we take it as a deciding factor in one's ability to wield a Keyblade, it is a plot hole. So I choose to see it as merely a rite of passage: Clean, efficient, and most importantly, symbolic.

Well, I did mention I'm still lacking in the "Who did the choosing" department. I'm willing to accept it wasn't divine right; but I believe fate plays a part. If the only thing separating Sora from other kids is that he had the kindness and bigness of heart to allow someone else's heart into himself, then that alone is enough to convince me. Maybe he's not the chosen one. Maybe he's just the only one who could be chosen.

We don't know for sure that the Kingdom Key and Kingdom Key D came from the X-blade we see in Birth by Sleep. It seems like the most logical conclusion, but for all we know, that could be another in a long line of red herrings. Perhaps the keys come from elsewhere... from the original, now-shattered X-blade, perhaps? Of course, this is venturing well into uncharted territory, I admit.

That's true, the keychain does tie it to Disney Castle... although that doesn't necessarily hurt my hypothesis so much as complicate it. Perhaps Disney Castle is involved somehow, in ways we haven't been told. Perhaps that's how Mickey knows so much about the events unfolding.

But the simplest answer doesn't explain everything. Why "my liege?" Why that, specifically? Why would the Organization be royalty to the lesser Nobodies? Why did we only hear this once, and only in reference to Roxas, of all people? Occam's Razor only works if the simplest answer actually satisfies, and in this case, it does not.

Tomayto, tomahto. To be honest, I play fast-and-loose with words like "destined" and "chosen." If only one person could be a fit for the job, Sora's definitely proven himself worthy. But I also don't believe in coincidence - especially considering how much of KH's story we now know is the fault of .

Basically this. Sora grew organically into a role that would later appear to have been destiny - as is often the case in these new-age fantasy "hero's journey" tales. I don't think it's out of the question to believe he will enter Kingdom Hearts or preside over its power, but that doesn't mean he has to use it, too. The current state of the world is not as it once was: Where once the light was open to all, now it is sealed away. I think it's Sora's task to return the light to the world, not necessarily to use it as a weapon or reshape it in his image. In the end, yes, he will serve as its protector. Why else would the seven lights be referred to as guardians, while the thirteen darknesses are seekers?

Interesting point about the X-blade, and one I've given some thought. I'm beginning to wonder if we all haven't got the wrong idea in our heads when we think the climactic battle in Kingdom Hearts III will beget a new X-blade. Maybe the real reason Xehanort's plan failed in Birth by Sleep is because there can only be one X-blade, made from two proper Kingdom Keys, and it is impossible to forge a new one. In that case, either Xehanort doesn't actually know how the X-blade is made - just that it is fated to resurface at the next great clash of light and dark - or he truly was just being hasty, as he said. The only other ones who can possibly know the truth are Yen Sid and, more importantly, King Mickey; otherwise he wouldn't have had the knowledge or the motivation to seek out the Kingdom Key D. And if that's the case, it means the only way this fight is gonna happen properly is if Kingdom Key D is stolen from him...or if he turns on us. Which is basically a non-possibility considering this is run by Disney and it'd be REALLY F%&KIN' WEIRD for Mickey to be a heel in a Disney production.

I like the idea that Oathkeeper is what Sora's default Keyblade would look like if not for the interference of the Kingdom Key. Not a perfect idea, but a neat one. It's a more intricate design that serves as a better foil to Xehanort's default Keyblade, for starters. Perhaps the two will start the fight wielding Kingdom Keys, and once those have served their purpose they'll both switch to something more personal.

Christ, I forgot he said that with his mouth hole. WHAT AN IDIOT. Why doesn't he just refuse to reveal the trade secrets, like a sensible writer? Furthermore why do I spend so much time analyzing the writing of a less-than-stellar writer That or lie, which he may have been. Wouldn't be the first time a writer lied to keep a secret.

At best, I think it's a little of both. Or it could be a combination of factors. We know that swords exist and can be forged, yet we don't bat an eyelash when in a fantasy setting a character summons from the ether a blade tailor-made to suit them; I see this as kind of the same thing, only with all Keyblades in existence having somewhat nebulous origins. Just...different kinds of nebulous. The ability itself, however, must have some consistent factor, something that all wielders have in common, and I just can't rationalize how it can be transferred wholly from one person to another. There are a lot of things I'll accept are just ambiguous, but that one irks me. I'd prefer to strike the idea than take it as inconsistent.

To put it another way, there are clearly aspects of it that are from the heart, and clearly others that are given form and agency of their own; we just seem to disagree on which bits are which.

How'd Roxas and Xion wield a Kingdom Key each, then? It was never stated that those are blank Keyblades with two of the same keychain attached. And Xion may have been a fake of a fake, but she could sure as hell kill stuff same as anyone else in the Sora bloodline, so her Keyblade can't be all that transient.

Yeah, that's the thing that's tough to sort out. It makes sense for creatures of light and dark, but for the shells they leave behind? I dunno. Then again, we're never told how humans originate in the KH universe; maybe they themselves are creatures of light, which would mean Nobodies ultimately come from light, even if they feel estranged from it.

I never saw it that way, even at Hollow Bastion. I saw that as Maleficent and Ansem twisting Riku's mind, and him twisting Sora's in turn, until the boy believed he had nothing going for him, manipulation which he ultimately overcame by finding a more personal source of strength. And it only ruins that image if you let it; there are many levels of uniqueness, and having someone perfectly generic as the centerpiece is just as overrated as having a flawless noble. I think it's as simple as an artistic contradiction: Sora's not special, but that in the end is what makes him special, because no one else could do this. No one else could be trusted to preside over what amounts to the known universe - except someone who feels just about everyone around is better than him, or has something he doesn't, and that the best thing he can do with his life is to serve their needs and carry on their spirit in his heart. No one is more fit to be king than the man who thinks himself a peasant.

No way. Touching a Keyblade isn't a ceremony. Tons of people have touched a Keyblade without becoming wielders. Hell, almost every Organization member should've picked it up. And why didn't Leon become one? No, the ritual aspect is too inconsistent.

But if it's a physical thing that can abandon its master, why didn't Sora get the Earthshaker? Riku never even saw the Kingdom Key before he saw it in Sora's hands; why is that the form it took? Why didn't it take that form for anyone else who was just learning the ropes?

You know how in A:TLA there were only like three lightningbenders and one metalbender, and in LoK they're running around everywhere? Maybe it's a practice that can be taught, but people have forgotten how it's done. Considering how many Keyblade wielders there used to be, perhaps it's an art that was once widespread, and there simply aren't enough people who remember the old ways to empower more people to use the Keyblade.

As far as there being only one Master Xehanort's Keyblade...well sure, unless he makes more. I mean, they can be forged. We know that two copies of one Keyblade can exist at once. Even if it's by some bizarre fluke from a freak of nature who defies all recorded in-universe laws, it can be done.

Sora's is the only one shown to have that property, and you've already been to the thread where I explain why I think it's so special. And either way, we're still talking about a physical object, not the very presence of mind to be able to summon and effectively wield that object in combat. A thought form can't be sentient, that is way too far over the heads of KH's target demographic.

No no, you were clear. Just wanted to be 100%. Ok, that doesn't blow any holes in my hypotheses, then. Man, "theories" is a much shorter word, but I know it's wrong. Can I just call them "hypos?"

Fair point, but you've got to admit the Organization seems to flip-flop on their treatment of him, even within KHII - even within the initial seven days. We're never told what Axel's orders were, only what the plan was once Sora woke up. Besides, maybe the Dusks just said it, orders notwithstanding. It only holds up with circular logic, but then again, maybe we don't have all the necessary premises to reason this out yet.

But they're also born partially of an essence, or more accurately a lack thereof. They come from some primordial something, no matter what forms they took - human, Heartless, what have you - and my hypothesis is that that something recognizes a ruler. Something, or someone, or both, that governs it.

Not buying it. That's only something that was said aloud as of KH3D. Maybe the point is to show how special someone with nothing truly special about him can be. A sort of "The meek shall inherit the Earth" kinda deal. Still technically the same message, but befitting the scheme laid out in the first game, where he definitely was not an ordinary kid and was never treated as such.

Isn't it easier to assume that it's possible to learn how to wield a Keyblade without any sort of rite? How else do you explain Kairi's case, or Axel's?

Besides, how could Riku's ability have been passed on to Sora? He never actually abandoned it, like I said; he just forgot he had it. What's more, we have to assume that the "Keyblade Proficiency" feat somehow detached from Riku, floated through the ether, and decisively found its way to Sora. It stretches the limits of imagination to think the very ability to hold a certain sort of weapon is a living entity that has enough agency to, when abandoned by one person, move on specifically to another one. Otherwise, hell, our chosen one could've been Selphie.

Ok, it would really help my understanding both of this topic and of one I just started to get an answer to this, and I probably should've asked much sooner: Did Ventus ever have or use the Kingdom Key? You say he never used one on Destiny Islands, but did he ever come across it somewhere else? As I recall it wasn't one of his available blades in BbS, but I could be wrong.

Wait, so if Xehanort had it... Ohhhh marmalade. Oh man alive, I've GOT to plug that into the equation if it's correct...
