Who else remembers when your dodge move didn't catapult you into the next zip code and you actually had to read your opponent's attacks and time your dodges accordingly?

Who else remembers when Second Chance/Once More didn't make you invincible for the rest of the game?

Who else remembers when level design wasn't "Go here do this go here do this" and there was actually an element of exploration?

Who else remembers when bosses didn't have to hit you a million and one times to do the damage a single strike used to do?

Who else remembers when Maleficent was a credible threat?

Who else remembers when the tutorial level wasn't four fucking hours long?

    WHO ELSE REMEMBERS BILLY ZANE?!

Take a look at this tiny section.

To the poster seeking a hot topic, this thread is a prison, surrounded by shitposts.

And so this boy sought out to escape from his prison.

He sought a way to cross over into other sections.

And he opened his thread to spam.

    Don't bother.

Your VMs can no longer reach him where he is.

His thread belongs again to spam.

All threads begin in spam, and all so end. His threads are no different.

Spam sprouts within them; it grows, consumes them. Such is its nature.

In the end, every thread returns to the spam whence it came!

You see... spam is the thread's... true... essence.

So. You've come this far, and still you understand nothing.

    Every topic must be derailed!

    EVERY THREAD RETURN TO SPAM!

Researching the Ram Dao, Lewis Carroll's original Alice in Wonderland, the genus Syringa (or lilacs), German schools of fencing, and the Grand Guignol. All for the same thing.

Hellsing - This will always be one of the first things I recommend to people. If it seems like it's all brainless violence at first... well, maybe there's something to that. But the more you read, the more you uncover the deeper themes each of the characters exemplify: the nature of man and beast, the destiny of humankind, determination in the face of impossible odds, and just how deep runs the killing intent of some people. It's one of the greatest commentaries out there on the "monster" archetype: what it means, what it feels like to be one, and what it really takes to kill one. Plus, I mean, it's got vampire nazis. And zombie Catholics! What's not to love? Finished, 10 volumes.

Solanin - A one-shot, but a pretty thick one, about two young adults living together in Tokyo, struggling to get by after the girl quits her dull-as-dishwater job. Really sad, really organic, deals with themes like independence, self-sufficiency, relationship roles, living versus surviving, and what happens to those old high school dreams when you don't follow through. If you've ever been in this situation or even worried about it, you'll care for these kids like they're your own brother and sister. Just prepare yourself for some extremely tragic stuff to happen later on down the line; this story spares no expense to get you crying.

Trinity Blood - An old favorite of mine, and another vampire manga, though of a very different sort from Hellsing. It stars a Crusnik named Abel Nightroad, and if you don't know what a Crusnik is, you're in for a treat: It's a vampire that feeds on other vampires. He works for the Vatican, one of three major powers in a sort of cold war with the human government and that of the Methuselah. You might be able to guess that there is a substantial amount of political intrigue involved in the story, but it is far from a talkie; details are introduced at a comfortable pace and step aside for the action when needed. There are also plenty of unique sci-fi elements to satisfy the tech geek in you. That, and the art is simply gorgeous, especially for the various Methuselah who saunter out to fight the hero. The novels, the manga, and the anime are all a little different, so if you've seen/read one and didn't care for it, it might still be worth your while to give this a shot. Not sure whether it's finished or not, but there are at least 11 volumes out in the U.S.

DOGS: Bullets and Carnage - What I originally expected to be a shoddy violence manga with an always-wins super-soldier protagonist turned out to be an intense, sometimes thought-provoking work with a lot of active players. The series attempts to juggle several main characters, all of whom could probably have their own manga, and their clashing personalities result in some amusing hi-jinx. The aforementioned super-soldier turns into a pretty complex character thanks to some thoughtful, acute personality details, not to mention the excellent official translation. All of this is complemented by good pacing, a diverse cast of heroes and villains, a superb sense of style (including some surprisingly accurate guns), and no shortage of pulse-pounding action. Of all the ones on this list, this one I have to recommend you actually buy; not that the others don't have great translations as well, but this one is simply too good to pass up. Unfinished, not sure how many volumes are out right now but at last count it was about 4 or 5.

D.Gray-man - Much, much darker and somewhat more gruesome than the average shounen, this is a personal favorite of mine. The plot sounds clichéd as all hell—Boy who fights monsters using cursed arm joins monster-fighting organization to fight more monsters and stop monster apocalypse—but the little touches are where it really shines. It's highly character-driven, giving lots of attention to Allen's (the protag's) friends, his relationship with them, and just how quickly and how strongly bonds form between them; then slamming all of that into the dirt when they get scattered time and time again, either by missions from central command, intense battles during said missions, or conflicting motives. It'll tug on your heartstrings, to be sure. Nobody's trustworthy, everybody's out to get them... but for every depressing moment, there's an equally heart-warming one to be had. People tell me it starts off slow, to which I have to respond, once the pieces are in place it delivers through and through. Better than the big three combined, with the same level of action and drama, even greater horror and thrills... and some of the best yaoi ships this side of Gravitation. Unfinished, and only recently settled into a monthly update schedule; the author is in poor health, from what I hear.

I never did get the original for the PS2, even after filling out my collection with those other niche classics like Killer7 and Odin Sphere. I'd look forward to an HD release. Cross your fingers!

I'm gonna have to be lame and say that I started with the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I can't remember it AT ALL because video games have been in my life for as long as I'm aware of having a life. But I owned that game, and NES was my first system. So it was probably either that or Mega Man 2. Much more vivid is my memory of playing the hell out of Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles on the Genesis, but I know for sure that I came upon that system later. In fact, I think it belonged to my half-sister, so...

    You make me feel old.

Well, it doesn't exactly say anything I didn't. It only confirms that there's a connection, doesn't explain how it works. I'm still skeptical about Anti Form showing up again, although Sora might have some other dark power(s) to tap into.

I didn't forget about it; I never knew about it. I haven't played Coded or Re:Coded. But it seems that plot arc was neatly resolved in the single installment where it's relevant.
