There's not really a good way to friendzone since it's a pre-emptive and cowardly practice. Why not wait until the person actually asks you out? I appreciate a firm and polite rejection far more than someone who seems to repel the thought of being with me romantically. The "I love you" bit is risky, at any rate. It can be as true as it wants to be, but to some people, it still stings in that context. Especially if the rejectee has a narrow definition of love...
Even so, basically the underlying sentiment is "That's a shame, but I can't help ya there pal." Unless the statement is immediately followed by "Let's fix that" or something to that effect. "...but I'm not." Again, for someone to say that externalizes them from the hypothetical. And, in that sense, it's insincere. If a person is not eligible to oneself, what makes one think they're eligible to anyone else? This is the same principle behind sappy rejection letters from publications. Some of them try to compliment your writing and say it's pretty much perfect. Then why don't you fucking take it? It's coddling, and it's disrespectful.
