The fact that you find the 'kids' who did it idiots doesn't change the fact that the cultural constant is in the midst of evolving into any other generic insult term. Much like how the middle finger was once an insult used to offend prisoners who had their middle finger chopped off to prevent them from being able to fire a bow, the original meaning is being lost.
You argue that the word never meant anything like that, but was never intended to refer to homosexuality either. It was meant to refer to happiness.
That's the point. Words change. That was the intent of my VEERRRY first post. Gay is my go to example of words that change in meaning over time, because it has such a colourful history.
