    The Giver

I actually read it on my own in 6th grade, so I wasn't forced to read it. It was just suggested to me.

I thought the book was amazing. Have you read the sister books to it? "Gathering Blue" and "The Messenger"? They're by the same author and they're both good as well. The messenger references the Giver the most, but it is a sequel to gathering blue which hardly mentions The Giver at all, so you kind of have to read both. Does that make sense? Probably not. Just read them. They're good.

I think I'd hate living in a society like that. However, if I was a member, I'd probably be content, like all of the characters, simply becuase I would be unaware that there was any other way of life.

I would much rather be the receiver of memories rather than the giver, though I suppose they are ultimately the same thing. Receiving the memories would be such a rush of emotion and completely opposite of what I'd be used to. I'd love to experience emotions for the first time.

You don't know what it feels like to be in love until you actually are, so it's hard to tell if you are or not when you really like someone. It depends on the person, I'd say. Love is truly caring about someone, willing to sacrifice something for them, and wanting to see them when they're not close to you. Love could be defined by many things. Only you know if you really are in love with a person or not, no matter what you tell yourself.

I've never had any experience that would lead me to believe in ghosts, and the stuff on TV and in movies is crap. As long as I have no visual proof that I see with my own eye (not stuff in a photograph or video) than I'll believe that they are real.

I'll also believe that the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot are real when I see them.

When I first saw the title of this thread I got really confused.

    But now it makes sense.

You're mom will most likely not make it through the entire video before she hugs you and starts crying.

Not true, becuase there's never been 3,000 people online.

For some reason I think Caetlin is right.

    But I just can't find a source..

    What does that mean?

It sounds like you're implying that the strike will make shows have better plot lines and make more sense, which isn't exactly the case. The writers themselves won't change once it's over, they'll just be paid more.

Must be very slowly. The beginning of that article also says "AND CARRIE UNDERWOOD WAS ON THE COVER LOOKING BEAUTIFUL"

    *sigh*

Baby steps. Hopefully we'll get there eventually.

    Fates

That is one of the smartest things I've read all day. *applauds*

Well, I really disagree with that, seeing as I'm Agnostic.

There's no need to be sorry, I'm not offended, I just REALLY disagree.

Anyway, we should get back on to the topic of fate. Although I suppose this could fall under that category as well. But we still shouldn't get into a religious debate.

I'm the same way. There was a time when I thought about it constantly and let the fact that our race is eventually going to self destruct consume me. But than I realized that our race is the only one that lives life with the full knowledge that one day it will end, so we have no excuse for wasting time. I find it easier to just think about small things, but not completely reject the impending doom our planet is inching towards either. The key is balance.

What on earth does that mean and how is it relevant to this topic?

The one thing I do agree with is the last paragraph.

I just hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime.

What led you to believe that?

This is in the Intelligent Discussion section. If you were to read the rules of the section that you're supposed to read before posting here, you would have realized that it was a serious section and therefore a serious thread.

Hardly enough to have a lasting effect on the people who try to change their appearance becuase of the other ads. Where have you read this? I'd like to see an article about that.

In the future, it might be theoretically possible for a large area to reach absolute zero, but I don't see why it would ever be done seeing as everything in that area would die instantly if it happened.

Yeah, liquid nitrogen is nowhere near the same as absolute zero.

I agree with you. As far as a person striving to reach expectations goes, I don't think anybody really expects them to be like that. They've just convinced themselves that they have to be becuase of the advertisements society is blinding them with. The expectations they are trying to reach are impossible.

    This breaks a few rules.

We're not supposed to post prologues, and this should be in the Original Works section.

I don't quite understand your first sentence, but I think I understand what you're saying, and I agree.

If society deems you unworthy, even if nobody goes out and says it to you, you could be thinking that simply based on outside influences.
