I completely agree about the teachers being underpaid and underappreciated. I expect they are in America, and I know they are here in Australia too. Smaller schools also suffer when there are inexperienced teachers, because the school has little control in what teachers they have employed. And then the students learn less... I think that an understanding of geography and the world can really broaden a person's outlook on things. In my area, geography is part of society & environment, and it covers geography, history and politics. This might not be essential to everyone, but it does provide a better understanding of things.
