^Yeah. Usually at funerals they ring a bell for each year that person has lived, so I'm pretty sure it symbolizes death. L pretty much knows whats gonna happen, so he doesn't even try to hide that fact from Light. In fact, it's probable that he WANTS him to know, so technically, Light know he's surrendered; not lost.
