The Twilight discussion taken further The "Twilight series sucks" thread has inspired me to play a little game with you guys. Sure, many readers think Twilight is bad. Others, however, love its story and the way it is written. I'll take the "Twilight sucks thread" one step further and I want to make an objective comparison. I think an opinion on Twilight can be elaborated best when comparing it to another writing style. I'll remain neutral here. On the left side we have Stephenie Meyer, whose Twilight series have sold more than 40 million copies. On the right side we have Eve Brondsningham, a relatively unknown author who hasn't sold 1000 copies of her work yet. The difference can hardly get any more significant, the only thing they have in common is that they are both relatively young writers. This is from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight: This is from the Eve Brondsningham's Cross: Their content is loosely similar but at the very least comparable. They both lament on how the protagonist is different, elaborate either explicitly or intricately just how this is the case and imply the protagonists' respective self-loathing or at least self-criticism. These excerpts are both from the beginning of the novel, meaning they both lack intensity and cannot be used as a reference for more intense paragraphs. However, to compare them both they will suffice. Judging on content, originality, "intelligence" and other features, which of these writing styles do you think is better? As promised I will assume a neutral position.
