Actually, I think you can bump your own threads if you have something new to contribute. It's true for fanfics at least. Making a whole new thread doesn't change that. Some threads get ignored all the same. At least in the writings section. I don't check Graphics/Art. Also, when someone does decide to view your work and likes it, he can look for more of your stuff just by skimming your portfolio thread, rather than having to look for threads among other work. That way there is somewhat more chance that your older work doesn't end up lost and forgotten.
You look good either way but I say pick #1 if you want to play safe and #2 if you're in a bold "daring" mood. Also #2 covers up your cleavage so if you hate boys ogling you I'd say the second one is a better pick in that light. I'm probably too late anyway. :D Have fun when you go out.

I can think of things people would rather have for Valentine's Day. Like anything up to and including a flask of menstrual excrements.
I'm already doing this in the Creativity Corner where this happens as well (mostly with poems). The system works. To be honest I'm kind of surprised that there are few members doing this. I think it's be a good idea for the Graphic/Art section as well.
