Hearing the sound of footsteps walking across the basement to the stairway, Melanie mumbled something in her half sleep state and covered her head with the pillow she slept with. She closed her eyes tightly, as if she could instantly go back to sleep, but she knew it was her time to get up in a few minutes. It was most likely 5 or 5:30 a.m. and that was the time the servants in the kitchen had to wake up. After they began work, the maid servants would have to start afterwards. Melanie was a maid. Sighing, Melanie took the pillow off her head and lazily sat up in the cot that was barely enough for her to fit into. Her feet would be hanging out of it if she was just a bit taller. She glanced at the other people in the area she was in that either didn't have a cot, pillow, blanket, or that didn't have anything. She was one of the people that didn't have a blanket, so every few nights she ended up not getting enough sleep sense it was too uncomfortable for her. The rancid smell also played a part in that.
