The humans don't need to be that underpowered and weak. They can be given a small glimmer of hope to fight back with. It'll be all the more satisfying for the magic people once that hope gets taken away from them. Unless things end up completely one-sided, slots shouldn't be necessary. I think either starting from the middle or end should work fine. Though that depends on what you have planned. If I think of any ideas, I'll let you know.
