Fundamentally, what I'm getting from this is that you're put off by the games fitting into the social standards of another culture. And that is a valdi criticism, I'm looking forward to Gaijin Goombah's video on the subject.

But let's get down to the depth with this

Just as America has its uncomfortable gun fetish thing, or Europe has its alcohol thing. We put up with the uglier parts of our culture that shine through because of the other positive sides

Well, it's a pretty big cultural difference first of all. In Japan, boobs are far less of a taboo, and nudity is symbolic of purity. I don't really want to talk about each image individual, I'm not familiar, but it seems like you picked the absolute most extreme options

Lightning has some range. Two of those costume accentuate her breasts, two of them aren't even kinda revealing and jsut look practical, and the one on the elft is somewhere inbetween

Sex mini game in God of War? Lara Croft? Grand Theft Auto? Thoguh honestly I'd say the bigger issue is that there are less objectification of women in westerng games not because it's less common, but because a woman APPEARING in a game in any capacity is rare in itself. Sure, Yuna wears a more revealing costume in FFX-2, but at least it's a decently characterized protagonist in a major video game.

Fail to you maybe, I'm sure some people thought it was badass because it made it into the game in the first place. Destiny is Destiny, the meaning seems pretty obvious. "Destiny is what it is, it's inevitable, and can't be fought" this compleely flies in the face of what she said in the first game, but I also haven't actually seen this line ingame

That's a dangerously absolutist view. There's plenty to be learned from the past. You're looking a bit far into the future with video games, I'm afraid. Gaming journalism may be digital, but it's all still fundamentally the same, just updated more quickly. Women in gaming is becoming a major thing faster than any other genre, sure, but the fact that Frozen is being priased for the mere fact that a girl doesn't get the guy at the end, and movies have come further than games have in that regard, similarly, outside of a few specific examples games are nowhere near as profitable as movies. If you want a game that appeals to different audiences, that's what indie games are for, major games are going to go with the tried and true dominant demographic. That's why every western protagonist has a shaved head and brooding countenance, why Japanese games have sexualized women and yaoi undertones. They know thier audience, or at least what sells.
I'd say more female characters from Final Fantasy games make better role models than most of what coems from western devs.

    Well I mean
you could just play Lightning Returns for the story, gameplay, world, quests, music, or any of the many other things that have absolutely nothing to do with what pieces of frabric she's wearing

I find Lightnign boring, but she's not devoid of characteristics. She's aggressive, but shy about certain things, hates showing weakness, is easily annoyed, a huge skeptic, and that's just what I can recall off the top of my head. Nothing groundbreaking, but she's hardly an empty shell.

Interesting you bring up Tifa because she's one of the msot popular FF females in the west.

I guess at that point it's just art imitating reality then, because 9/10 women I run into when I go out are dressed provocatively to some degree. I don't really get what you're trying to get at this point though. Japan has weird fetishes? Everywhere does, especially in this information age we live in that transcends the boundaries of the old world.

I guess now would be a good time to note that most of my information has been coming from the few Gaijin Goombah videos I've seen, and according to him, boobs are a punchline in Japan
Lightning is a nail in the coffin because of the clothes she wears, not because of her characterstics or something? Now THAT sounds like the sexist thing to me

Eugh, I'm not sure I covered everything, or if I covered it well... this has crashed/deleted too many time for me to spend any more time on it ._.

That was the first, and few scenes in a video game where I've actually gotten teary eyed.
Saving Cid is insanely obscure, yeah

Officially, Terra is the main character. To the point where if she's not in your party when you reach the final boss, she shows up anyways. The largest plot points revolve around her
, and the resolution of the plot is primarily centred on her. Celes picks up the slack in the middle though, and has, quite frankly, two of the most memorable scenes in FF history

I recommend the GBA version. FF6 is severely lacking in remakes, so that's so far the definitive version
To get the most out of FF9 you need to play the earlier games though, it's basically a celebration of the first eight FFs

And Mickey Mouse wears tonnes of outfits. It's freaking DISNEY guys, stop sexualizing it

Aw what, you haven't played FF6? It's the best one!

    I brought up FFX
I guess nobody has been billed as prominently as Lightning, but it stands that FF6 does have not one but TWO female leads

Talking about a game made 22 years ago, sure, but people all around are calling for a return to those good old days, which baffles me because those days were BASICALLY the same.
Honestly, I'd say it's a lot more immature to think it's immature for something sexualized to exist, in pretty much the same way that people pretend they're mature by pretending works like penis or boob don't exist.

1- As stated above, that's a HUGE, ridiculous generalization based on one character, in a trilogy no less, to make about an entire country and their games. And it's not like anywhere else is different. You act like every other country has transcended poor stupid Japan, but we're all about pandering, doesn't matter where

Lightning exists to model clothes? So the first two games, where she had one costume? Seems legit.
Now that I think about it, KH characters are really just models for showing off clothes too, how sordid.

That quote has nothing to do with... anything. It's a... somewhat dumb one liner? **** JAPAN

Yeah, this game is WAY lower standard than the other games. Such lines as "Son of a submariner", "TURTLE", "Oh poopy" "This guy are sick" "Let's mosey" "Welcome to Cornelia" "m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-MAGIC" "Everybody, love and peace!" "HA HA HA HA HA" "I'm Captain Basch!"

Yeah nom it's THIS game that really pushed them over the edge of stupid.

Porn tycoons? Okay, not my area of expertise, but isn't the purpose of porn for the person to NOT wear clothes? Unless there's a fetish out there for super elaborate dresses that look like somebody took a hole puncher to.

I thought people complained about Lightning's breasts and butt being tiny. Personally never could tell becuase most of her clothes ahev capes or some such that cover her back, and I tend to be running towards my objectives, not the camera.

But no, no, you're RIGHT. This is just porn. Definitely has nothing to do with Japan's fashion fixation or anything[DOUBLEPOST=1395160225][/DOUBLEPOST]
It's broken for you? Working fine for me. Anyways, it's the stupid Moogle costume
Originally Basch was planned to be the main character, but someone along the way decided players wouldn't be able to relate to him. Vaan and Penello were added late in development so they could fill their teen hero quota, and that's why they hardly impact the plot

I do think it's vital that people learn how to discern context, people who can't tend to not have the best survival instincts, but I don't think they should suffer for lacking in a very specific skill

I DO NOT get this dress up argument. Changing costume has been a thing in Final Fantasy since the FIRST game, and the Job thing has been around since FF3. What makes THIS game so much worse? The fact that ONLY a woman plays dress up?
I'd also consider Yuna the main character off FF10 but that's another topic >.>
But yeah, you're about right in your assessment of the 13 series overall. The first one was inoffensive, the second one had better gameplay but the story took a turn for the Kingdom Hearts, and nobody wanted Lightning Returns but you can't really blame Square Enix on that because the first two games sold pretty well (from my research, the only games that outsold the first one were FF7 and FF10) but I'm glad that they made this sequel rather than leave the story on that massive cliff hanger.

And I guess while we're talking about all this stuff. I found Lightning bland from the start, but I figured that was intentional, since that's generally what happens to main characters in well... anything, really. Leave them vague and they'll resonate with more people. But honestly, unlike a lot of people, I find Serah to be a pretty good protagonist. She has personality, and they're not afraid to give her flaws, which is a pretty big deal when portraying women in ANY media, never mind video games. Paired up with Noel, who is basically 20 year old Sora, I actually really liked the part of 13-2... and was disappointed to see all oft he spotlight beign hogged by Lightning in the sequel

I'm actually specifically recalling a trailer that showed off the transformations and I remember laughing because unlike every other anime clothes transformation ever the clothes they had her change into was less revealing :P

I don't really get the whole argument with Lightning Returns though becuase what I noticed with those costumes is that they tended to get LESS revealing unless it was specifically based around sex appeal
I also don't get the "OMG GUYS- LIGHTNING DRESSES UP AS A BUNNY THAT'S SO SEXIST FINAL FANTASY 13 SUCKS WHY CAN'T WE GO BACK TO THE OLD GAMES" when Final Fantasy V let you dress up a14 year old girl like a bunny
