(I believe the article Kotaku was referring to was not posted long ago so this should be familiar)

Sure, last month Nintendo Europe's Laurent Fischer said the Wii's storage problem was only affecting "geeks and otaku". But that was last month. This month? It's a big problem, one affecting not only the scum-sucking hardcore of Nintendo's murky cash tank, but one affecting everyone. Reggie explains:

"From an Americas-centric perspective, here is the reality we see. We have a consumer base who loves virtual console. We have a userbase who really is enjoying WiiWare content. So for us really our challenge really is how do we satisfy all these consumers who are loving all of the product we make available on a download basis? As we continue to have things, as you point out, like â€˜Mario Kartâ€™ that has its own channel when youâ€™re playing from an Internet perspective, weâ€™re just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it."

It's comforting to picture Nintendo HQ, deck chairs and money-counting machines upturned, as klaxons sound, tech teams scrambling to "solve" this problem before the Today Show starts complaining about it.

Square-Enix major shocking FFVII announcement at DKS3713 event

The Final Fantasy drama is definitely far from over. With fans now over the shock (done with the denial stage), and most probably in the angry phase, the producers of the popular Square Enix franchise is now talking about the much-talked about Xbox 360 version.

Shinji Hashimoto and Yoshinori Kitase, in an interview with 1Up, has revealed that although FFXIII will also be developed for Microsoft's console, this does not in any way mean that the PS3 version will be affected, simply because this will be finished first.

And while admitting that a simultaneous launch will definitely be no walk in the park, they say that they're "definitely trying to decrease the gap between the Japanese launch and when we release it to the rest of the world."

But the juicy part is when they were asked if there had been any negative reaction from Japanese Xbox 360 owners about the FFXIII announcement since (quoting the interview question) "It's not coming out on 360 there, and Japanese gamers won't be able to play the U.S. import on their systems, since the console's region-locked.

To this they replied: "There doesn't seem to be any overly negative feedback yet, as Japanese users have known since the beginning that it's coming to PS3. "

But what's even more interesting and juicy in this interview was their hinted "big announcement" pertaining to FFVII in the coming weeks. This is in response to a query on updates regarding Tetsuya Nomura's adding of new scenes to the FFVII: Advent Children Complete Blu-ray release.

You can look forward to the upcoming invite-only fan event DKS3713 [taking place in Tokyo on August 2 and 3], where we'll have a major announcement that will shock the fans in attendance.

Another shocking announcement?!? Really now, after the Xbox 360 bomb that dropped on us a couple of days ago, we now know anything is possible with them. This comes in complete sync with what Nomura himself has revealed last week, although at that time, it seemed like they weren't sure yet whether to announce it at E3 or wait for a later date. We now know the answer to that bit. Anyhow, we guess we'll just have to wait and brace ourselves for this next wave of surprises, then.

The coproducers also opened up about other tidbits on the franchise, such as character development for Lightning, the game's heroine, updates on the mobile title Final Fantasy Agito XIII, as well as pressure from meeting fans' expectations of a long-running, highly successful franchise.

*RUMOR* PS3 40GB downward compatibility hitting this October

As german site inplaystation.de reports, downward compatibility for the 40GB PS3 will be available this october via firmware upgrade. They talked to a Sony importer from germany who told them, Sony is going to release a new firmware which allows a fully software emulation of PS2 games.

Since Sony announced that they're going to offer downloadable PS2 games in PSN, this rumor sounds believable.

Jack Thompson claims "Videogames caused 9/11"

Spencer Halpin's upcoming hullabaioo documentary film Moral Kombat takes on videogames violency and blames that videogames caused the 9/11 incident. The film features also none other than Jack Thompson and is even predicting ten times of worse school massacre.

The documentary film's main subject is the gaming violence, featuring the facts that terrorists used flight simulators in training or that people like Pekka-Eric Auvinen or Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold used to play violent video games.

Jack Thompson is widely known of his crusade against video gaming and this documentary film where he is under the spotlight, will surely give him a new kick for his crusade as well as a lot of negtive publicity from the gaming community.

The film features some of the electronic sports title games, Call of Duty, Half-Life 2 and Halo 2.

Film's trailer was already uploaded to YouTube on 26th December 2006, but the original film has not been released out yet. The release date will be announced soon. Project's budget is between $650,000 and $1,000,000 dollars.

Jeff Gertsman has been fired from Gamespot

We've heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn't necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to Gamespot shows that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching Kane & Lynch. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign."

Jeff's review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as "Fair" on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as "mixed or average reviews." According to our tipster, it wasn't necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann's rumored axing, but the "tone" of the review.

Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It's now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted.

As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. "As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life," wrote the tipster.

Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot hasn't proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a "no comment."

Report: Guitar Hero III spurs digital song sales

With more than 70 songs in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and 1.4 million copies of the game sold in the US in its first six days on sale, there are doubtlessly a wealth of people being introduced to new songs by the game. Apparently a significant chunk of those gamers like what they're hearing, because Ars Technica is reporting that a number of tracks included in the game have seen their sales skyrocket on digital music services like iTunes.

Citing Nielsen Soundscan data provided by an unnamed source "close inside the music industry," the tech-centric site said the data clearly showed that Guitar Hero III was pushing digital sales of the songs on its tracklist. In the two weeks surrounding Guitar Hero III's late October release, Soundscan data showed that weekly sales of songs from The Strokes, Sonic Youth, The Sleeping, and Slipknot increased sharply, between roughly 200 and 300 percent. After that launch period, the Soundscan data showed that the growth leveled off, but sales still remained near their elevated levels.

One factor that likely contributed to those sales figures is the iTunes Guitar Hero Essentials collection, which was promoted on the music store's front page in the week before the Legends of Rock launch. The collection compiles songs from every installment of the Guitar Hero franchise in one place for easy access--and purchase.

"It doesn't appear to matter if you're in the main game or are a bonus song; huge gains are seen everywhere," the source told Ars Technica. "As long as your song ships with the game and you offer the track to be downloaded digitally, you see an increase."

The same could not be said of album sales. Although some albums with singles featured in the game (Weezer's 1994 debut album) did see sales increases of 47 percent, Queens of the Stone Age's Era Vulgaris, released this past June, showed no such signs of growth.

DS Lite gets new gold, rose bundles

Late last month, a Sears sales ad leaked to the Internet and brought word of two new Nintendo DS packages in the works. One bundle paired a "metallic rose" system with the "Best Friends" edition of Nintendogs, whereas the other featured a gold DS packed in with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. In the ad, the rose-tinted system was emblazoned with a paw print, and the golden DS carried a logo of the iconic Zelda triforce.

Phantom hourglasses don't really exist.

Nintendo finally made the two offerings official today when it confirmed that the bundles will go on sale starting November 23 in the US. That's the day after Thanksgiving, the unofficial start of the holiday-shopping season, commonly referred to as "Black Friday" for the throngs of bargain-crazy consumers that assault stores in search of deals.

Although the new DS bundles aren't as impressive a steal as a $229 laptop, they will go for $149.99, offering gamers a $15 price break over the cost of buying the game and the DS Lite separately.

DS TV goes on sale in Japan

Yesterday, Nintendo released DS TV, a peripheral which was originally announced back in 2004, but had hardly been heard of since.

It's a DS. That plays TV. It's called DS TV.

The DS TV costs Â¥6,800 ($62.70), and can be used with the original DS or the DS Lite. The design is different from the prototype shown in 2004, as it features a simple aerial cartridge which plugs in the back of the handheld, and no base unit.

The top screen is used for the TV picture, while the bottom screen can be used to do things such as change channels and take notes.

According to Web site J-Cast, there was an avalanche of interest when preorders were offered, and within two hours the Web site was down. A spokesperson for Nintendo said, "As it was television--and not a game--we intended to begin accepting the orders quietly without prior announcement. We had not expected that so many accesses [to the Web page] would be made."

A Nintendo spokesperson told GameSpot that it currently had no plans to bring DS TV to other regions.

Halo 3 theme hits 360 version of Guitar Hero III

Some Guitar Hero fans have been unhappy with the cost of downloadable songs for the series since its debut on the Xbox 360 earlier this year. Microsoft and Activision are set to silence those complaints for at least one day, as the pair announced that in appreciation to their fans, they will offer the "Mjolnir Mix" of the Halo theme song as a free downloadable track for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on Thanksgiving.

Written and partly performed by Martin O'Donell and Michael Salvatori, the track also features some guitar shredding courtesy of real-life guitar hero Steve Vai. Vai got his start playing with Frank Zappa, has since played with Whitesnake, participated in the guitar-centric G3 tour, and showcased his skills in the 1986 film Crossroads, where he was the devil's surrogate axe-man in a guitar duel for the soul of Ralph Macchio's character.

This is the second time Activision has produced free Guitar Hero III track downloads. The first such offering allowed players to play the game's three boss battles all the way through as standard songs apart from the game's career mode.

The Romantics sue Activision

Michigan band The Romantics, most famous for tunes What I Like About You, and Talking In Your Sleep has filed a federal lawsuit against Activision.

The group, which is still together and performing its hits today, was formed on Valentine's Day, 1977--hence the name The Romantics--and is objecting to its likeness and an "imitation" of one of its songs being used in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.

The lawsuit reads, "The imitation of the plaintiffs on the defendant's video game is virtually indistinguishable from the authentic version."

The legal paperwork alleges that permission was not sought to create a soundalike of the band's most famous song, and that many fans believe that the Guitar Hero version is the real deal. The Romantics are claiming unspecified damages.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the band's attorney has said that copyright is not the issue, since Activision secured permission for a cover version through the proper channels. Attorney William Horton said, "It's a very good imitation, and that's our objection. Even the guys in the band said, 'Wow, that's not us, but it sure sounds like us.'" He added, "The sales of this game are huge. We're all for good commerce. We just want to share in it."

If the case is successful, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s could get pulled from store shelves.

NIMF miffed with M-rated sales to minors

The National Institute on Media and Family isn't releasing its annual game-industry report card until early next month, but a San Diego-based affiliate of the group has given a sneak peek at the results, a NIMF representative confirmed to GameSpot today.

As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, a two-month undercover survey found that underage teens were able to purchase games rated M for Mature at 46 percent of surveyed stores. Included in the group were 60 retailers nationwide. Games carrying the M rating are intended only for audiences 17 and older.

The stat was attributed to a representative of the East County Youth Coalition, which aided the NIMF in conducting the survey. That group wants retailers to adhere better to the ratings guidelines, create formal training procedures for employees, display information about the ratings in their stores, and to physically separate M-rated titles from the rest of its offerings.

The 46 percent figure falls more-or-less in line with a Federal Trade Commission report on violent media released in April. In that report, the FTC found that 42 percent of children aged 13-16 were able to buy games rated M for Mature, a significant improvement over the 69 percent that were able to do so in a 2003 study.

The NIMF's findings still put the game industry well ahead of most other entertainment industries when it comes to keeping violent content out of kids' hands. The FTC study found that only movie theaters did a better job of limiting minors' access to inappropriate material (39 percent of kids were able to buy tickets to R-rated films), whereas retailers sold children R-rated DVDs (or their unrated counterparts) 71 percent of the time. Vigilance in the CD aisles was even worse, given that minors were able to purchase recordings with explicit content 76 percent of the time.

Manhunt 2, ESRB in senators' crosshairs

The violent-game debate is back on the national stage once more. Just as the controversy over Manhunt 2 appeared as if it might have finally subsided, a group of senators have brought the issue back to the forefront.

The cadre of politicians includes two Democrats, a Republican, and an independent who used to be a Democrat; all of them have previously supported legislation involving games, and all have (or had) presidential aspirations. Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY and current presidential candidate), Joe Lieberman (I-CT, formerly a democrat and candidate for president in 2004, and Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential race), and Evan Bayh (D-IN, who publicly considered a run in 2008 only to opt against it) proposed the Family Entertainment Protection Act to restrict minors' access to violent games. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS and recently withdrawn 2008 presidential candidate) attempted to pass the Truth in Video Game Rating Act, which would have required the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to play through the games it assesses.

Today, the four senators sent a letter to the rating board suggesting that "it may be desirable to revise or enhance the current ESRB rating system." Specifically, they express concern over its rerating of Manhunt 2, which gave the game an M for Mature instead of the original AO for Adults Only. In the letter, the senators note that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) maintained its ban on the game even when presented with the revised edition that received an M from the ESRB.

In addition, they called for a closer look at the ratings on games for Nintendo's Wii, due to the nature of its motion-sensing controller.

"That system permits children to act out each of the many graphic torture scenes and murders in Manhunt 2 rather than simply manipulating a game pad," the senators wrote. "This led one clinical psychologist to state that the realistic motions used with the Wii mean that 'You're basically teaching a child the behavioral sequencing of killing.' While this was not cited as the reason for the BBFC decision, we do believe that the ESRB should take the Wii Remote controller, and future advances in game controllers, which create more realistic gaming environments, into consideration."

The senators then questioned the ratings process and said that the group withholds information from the public and developers about why a game's rating is given or changed. They stated that previous explanations from the ESRB about maintaining confidentiality for unreleased games shouldn't hold any weight once a game is released, and sought more detailed information about the reviewing process.

"In sum, we ask your consideration of whether it is time to review the robustness, reliability, and repeatability of your ratings process, particularly for this genre of 'ultra-violent' video games and the advances in game controllers," the letter reads. "We have consistently urged parents to pay attention to the ESRB rating system. We must ensure that parents can rely on the consistency and accuracy of those ratings."

An ESRB representative confirmed for GameSpot that the letter had been received, and said the board would be responding.
