Just in case anyone else reads this thread, here's my theory on it, beginning with this diagram.

This timeline is in reference strictly to time and Xehanort as an entity, not as a "body" partially or completely inhabited by him.

As we can see, there is a loop. However, this loop does not create an alternate timeline. This is due to the Memory Loss, which is the defense mechanism against just that. Because Young Xehanort's actions affect only the future and not his present (our past), the timeline can continue uninterrupted and not split. By the time we get to the end of KH3D, all of these events have already happened. Therefore, unless somebody were to go back and interrupt this stable flow of time (which can't happen due to the restrictions placed on time travel in KH), no crazy time paradoxes or infinite loops based on alternate time-lines or alternate versions of Xehanort as a being rather than multiple bodies should occur. Theoretically, we shouldn't even have to deal with time travel anymore since it's in such a nice little loop, and we can move chronologically into KH3 moving simply forward into our time line.

    P.S.
Even if YMX doesn't return at the end of KH3D and in fact becomes one of the 13 Xehanorts we will deal with in KH3, that simply expands the range of the preset loop in the timeline. The fact remains that YMX will forget all happenings, and due to this fact only the future is affected. It's kind of similar to Steins;Gate, in where the version of the main character from the future tricks the version of the version of himself from past into beleiving that things haven't changed, even though they have, and therefore the timeline can proceed to a point it can move forward while changing the future without changing the past.

I personally don't think so. I think the story was written in chunks as certain parts of the story progressed. More in depth in the spoiler.

For instance, did they know while making KH1 that the ominous hooded figure in the cave was later going to be used as a time travel device to explain that everything that has happened so far has been planned to a T? I don't think so. The connection is fantastic, but you'd have to be some kinda ungodly writer to know that far ahead before hand.

What I think might've happened is that they had started forming ideas for KH2 while in development of KH1, but like Nomura said, wouldn't follow up on them unless the game sold well. Once it did, we see Final Mix in which an organization member shows up to fight Sora. Once that had the green light, I think they planned through CoM and KH2 together, as half of the organization was offed in CoM. If you think about it, KH2 also had the potential to wrap up the series in a nice little bow. After that came 385/2 days, and then, as the series progressed fantastically, it wasn't until BBS that the Master Xehanort arc we are in today came into full fruition. When making that, they at least planned through 3D. There's no way of knowing if they've actually planned all the way through to the end of KH3 though, as it's still so early in development, and can go so many directions, but they might have. Who knows?

So, does it stand to reason that each realm has it's own worlds like the Realm of Light does? The only known worlds in the Dark Realm being the Dark Margins, one of which is in Darkness looking out to in between, the other half in the In Between looking out to Darkness? While Castle Oblivion/LoD, The Crossroads, and Traverse Town are worlds located in the In Between, and of course all the Disney worlds and DI are in the Realm of Light?

I was referencing as if that door was in the In Between. Beyond the door was the Realm of Darkness, yet Sora and the others would have had to end up back on DI with Kairi to go straight back to the Realm of Light. That way it only makes sense that they wake up at the Crossroads. But then again, it does make sense logically that they were still in the Realm of Light, just in the darkness created by all the worlds that were lost to it, and that door just led directly to the Realm of Darkness.

Yeah, Kairi ended up on DI because she was there when it was destroyed, but I'm talking about how she ended up at Kingdom Hearts to call out to Sora just before DI began reforming. But if that 'place' was literally what was left of the destroyed worlds, then it also makes sense that she just showed up there a few seconds early, just long enough to call out to Sora. And I suppose that with Sora, Donald, and Goofy, not being ported back to any world in particular, rather than being lost in the Darkness they had to go somewhere. So they just popped out at the Crossroads. If you wanted to read really deep into it, you could say that maybe Ventus's heart subconsciously led Sora there and Donald and Goofy just tagged along, but that'd be a big assumption to make.

Also, I won't doubt if you know otherwise, because I haven't kept up with the interviews or anything to know hard facts from fan theory (which is pretty much just what I consist of, if you can't tell >_>) but has Twilight Town been confirmed an In Between world? I mean, looking back, it doesn't have any really special properties like Traverse Down does. It's just the town that Roxas grew emotionally attached to because it was the first one he visited in 385/2 Days and coincidentally the one Ansem the Wise chose to make a digital copy of. I mean, besides when it's blocked in KH2, we can easily go back and forth from it in the Realm of Light, it has many permanent denizens, and it doesn't go anywhere. Now, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 'digital copy' was in the In Between, that's a whole different story.

That actually made it all click for me, thanks! But was it confirmed that they were looking out towards the Realm of Darkness? Wouldn't it make more sense they were facing the Realm of Light if Destiny Islands is on the other side of the water? That would have been how the message floated right to them from where Kairi sent it off in the Realm of Light.

It makes sense that they would end up in the In Between though. If you think about it, the entirety of The World and Never Was could have been made in the In Between, which is why it took a dark portal to get to it. However, when Ansem the Wise's laser thing freed the captured hearts the city fell apart and the in between fell back to it's natural state, in which, after taking care of Xemnas, Riku and Sora stumbled all the way to the Dark Margin.

It also establishes the possibility as to how in the heck Kairi ended up at Kingdom Hearts at the end of KH1. If Destiny Islands is the world closest to the Realm of Darkness, then it would make sense that Kairi could end up at the Door to the Dark Realm with Sora just just before the reformation of Destiny Islands pulled her back into the Realm of Light.

In that sense, I really want to know exactly where in that spectrum is what is now Castle Oblivion and The Crossroads. Exactly where on this spectrum do they lie? When Sora, Donald, and Goofy didn't take the high road to the Realm of Light with Kairi, and they didn't end up stuck behind the Door with Riku and Mickey, they popped up in the crossroads before finding their way to Castle Oblivion. Eraqus told Aqua that the Land of Departure was balanced in light and darkness. Could they also be in the 'In Between'?

Whoops! So sorry, it didn't even cross my mind. I got so overwhelmed in the KH culture here, I forgot everyone hasn't played every game, haha!

Yeah, in all the others it's necessary for Sora to be KH1 age. I still get what you're saying in why did they have to make all of the game's stories based on younger Sora though, but I guess it was necessary for where they wanted to go with it. Plus, a younger Sora is more innocent, seeing the good in everything with big, sparkly eyes, which is the core of his character.

The only one that initially confused me is why he was young in 3D, but that can be explained by:

the fact at the top of the game, they were back at Destiny Islands at the moment it was being destroyed before Master Xehanort pulled Sora to sleep and Riku entered Sora's dream. So they were stuck at that age for the rest of the game as they traversed the inception like dream worlds. Even when Riku was pulled out of Sora's dream, he remained a dream-eater so long as Sora was asleep.

A lot of people would like to see essentially a modern, upgraded version of the KH1 and KH2 battle system that's what makes the console games specific and unique while adding in key attributes that have been developed in the midst of the reign of handheld titles. This is probably what'll happen.

There's really a few key things to be pondered on the core of the fight system in KH3:

    Magic/Abilities:
This one is the biggie. In KH 1 & 2, it was simple, but general. You had a list of abilities/magic that you unlocked through the course of the game, you equipped which of those you wanted, end of story. With the developments made in the handheld series though, there is the possibility of much more advanced and customized abilities and magics. You could completely customize your fighting style by the time 3D came out, be it if you were a slow, heavy hitter, a nimble speed demon, or someone who plays is safe from as far away as possible based on the abilities you chose to put in your deck. I want to see this incorporated into the console fight system without making the magic list on the command menu ten feet long or making it limited to certain situations against certain enemies like the reaction commands against heartless in KH2. Maybe specialty abilities could be purchased and/or created and then equipped to be used in a combo-type system. Maybe if you use a base magic attack via the magic short-cut in the midst of that combo, it can result in an advanced magic combo. Say that you have an ability equipped that allows fira to ignite the foe. You use the aerial slam ability on an inflamed foe and it explodes when it hits the ground, doing aoe fire damage. If that concept doesn't work maybe do like some other action games and have a button that, when held, does high profile attacks that can be pre-equipped. For example, that enemy is up in the air and pressing attack follows up with an aerial swing, but holding L2 and pressing square activates time splicer or ragnarok. Essentially, it's like the previously stated idea of having a separate shortcut menu for abilities, however, instead of having a preset menu of only four attacks, what the buttons do depend on the abilities you have equipped, how much mp you have, and the status of your character in relation to your foe (i.e. ground vs air, range, remaining hp, etc.) That way, advanced magics and abilities can be incorporated into the base fighting system, button mashers can still easily play by just mashing attack and jumping around with mobility attacks while skilled players can integrate abilities into a highly customized playing experience, and the mp bar can be reserved for cures, base magic attacks like firaga, powerful attacks like ragnarok/breakers/ars arcanum, and maybe even, wait for it, summons. Speaking of which--

    Summons:
Nomura mentioned that the summon system will return but due to the experiments in handheld systems will be completely different. I think this means they're going to attempt combining the classic summoning system with the d-link system. How they'll do that, I'm not quite sure. But I bet it'll be interesting. Even better: Summons aren't limited to Disney characters. As you go along the story finding/freeing key characters, (Ven, Aqua, Roxas), you can either summon them or link their abilities. Whether this will use the mp bar or have a separate bar/point system I dunno. But with the hp, mp, and drive bars we already have a decent amount of bars. We don't want it to get clunky. Maybe as you get so many summon points, you can use mp to summon Disney and KH characters, bringing them into the battle and having combo and limit attacks with them like in KH2.

    Flowmotion:
Without a doubt this will be added. It's just too awesome not to be. And it's clearly been made apparent that they have a fetish for mobility, what with the talk of ride-able enemies. The real question is how they can expand upon it. I think the simplest, coolest, and most efficient way to incorporate the mobility system would be to meld it with the KH2 style of leveling up your mobility via drive forms. That way, you can still get all the awesome perks of dashing off of walls and drilling/slamming into enemies without it all being just handed to you on a silver platter at the start of the game like in 3D. With the new developments on the equipping of abilities, you could even be more customized with how you the player likes to move through the game.

    Reaction Commands:
Sure, they were cool in KH2 in comparison to KH1, but with all the other awesome new features they don't really compare. If anything, maybe a Resident Evil 6 type thing were you have to press certain buttons or button combinations at just the right time to get that heavy damage boost or awesome finisher. Not just the triangle buttons on certain occasions. That's it on my spiel.

    Other:
Most everything else can just be pulled from KH2 what with party members and what not. Anything else I think of concerning a specific system I'd love to share.
Btw, this is all totally theoretical. I just thought this kinda thing would be frikkin' awesome.
