Use the plain none translated version of kingdom hearts when the game crashes at what ever spot it crashes at until you pass it then switch back. I would assume the method you stated would work fine as well.
You'll be find with the completed files. as far as i read, only a few crashes with all none completed files anyways. only way around is to have the unmodded jap KHFM handy and use that at the crash.
Seeing this coming closer and closer to completion is making me exited! Been a long time since i played KH1, exited to play it again but on FM as I did with KH2FM.
