Well !, your calculator is busted, cause this is obviously not a problem of adittion, it's clearly some form of quadratic equation. I'm going to assume that by 5 you mean a porcupine, and by 3 you be a platypus, in which the original problem would be

spiky freak + cruel joke = x

And assuming x is a number, we can come to the conclusion that spiky freak + cruel joke = Rosie O'donnel.

See, it's that simple.

And for future reference, I find that Rosie is often the answer to all riddles.
