decided to make a new thread for this instead of taking over the etrian odyssey thread completely

Etrian Mystery Dungeon, a collaboration between Atlus and Spike-Chunsoft, is a crossover game between the Etrian Odyssey series and the Mystery Dungeon series. This game takes the randomly-generated dungeons and related mechanics (and, unfortunately, the hunger mechanic) of the Mystery Dungeon series and blends them with the setting, character creation, classes, skill trees, giant terrifying enemies, and more from the Etrian Odyssey series for an experience that promises to be the best of both worlds.

    Etrian Odyssey
    • Landsknecht - Your basic swordsman
    • Protector - Essentially a paladin or tank
    • Hexer - Lowers your opponent's stats and doles out status conditions
    • Medic - Heals you
    Etrian Odyssey II
    • Gunner - Long-range hard hitter
    Etrian Odyssey III
    • Sovereign (formerly Prince/Princess) - Provides status buffs and healing while taking hard hits
    • Ninja - Evasive speedster who offers support
    Etrian Odyssey IV
    • Runemaster - The black mage, fighting with Fire, Ice, and Volt spells
    • Dancer - Adequate fighter and buffs your stats
    Etrian Mystery Dungeon
    • Wanderer - An homage to the Shiren the Wanderer Mystery Dungeon series. Offers Mystery Dungeon-related skills, including blowing away enemies and tunneling through walls

As per the norm for Mystery Dungeon and as a change from Etrian Odyssey, all fights occur on the map as you travel, sometimes in Monster Houses where you enter a room and it immediately becomes filled with enemies. New to Mystery Dungeon, however, and adapted from Etrian Odyssey, are enormous on-field enemies called D.O.E.s (Dungeon-On Enemies), who serve essentially as mini-bosses that are to be avoided when possible, as they are typically several levels stronger than you when first encountered.

Also, pre-orders and initial shipments of the game will come pre-packaged with a soundtrack CD, and the music of the Etrian Odyssey series is arguably one of its highest-acclaimed strengths. :3

Here's a pretty extensive livestream of the game Atlus held, for your viewing pleasure:

The game will release in Japan on March 2, and in the US sometime in Spring.

    A few deets:
    • Etrian Mystery Dungeon will hit North America on April 7.
    • Of the ten classes, all but Prince(ss), Ninja, and Wanderer are available from the beginning of the game.
    • At the start of the game (and possibly all the way through?), you can only create a maximum of ten characters.
And here's a short trailer from the Nintendo Direct this week:

Here's the recently-revealed pre-order/launch edition of the game, titled the Sights and Sounds of Mystery Edition! It comes with:
    • The game, obviously
    • A collectible box
    • A 28-page art and info book on the game
    • A 6-track "Rough Sketch" CD, featuring "rough" versions of tracks from the game.
Here are a few additional gameplay details as well:
    • There is an in-dungeon shop that can appear called the Red Lion Shoppe, not dissimilar to the Kecleon Shop in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. You can make purchases from a small selection of items by walking over them and then paying as you leave the room containing the shop. If, however, you try to get away without paying, you will immediately be pursued by three incredibly strong Red Lion enemies and be unable to use an Ariadne Thread to escape the dungeon.
    • In a boss battle, you can control all four of your party members, as opposed to normally only controlling one at a time in the dungeon.
    • You can make a Fortress (no relation to the character class from Etrian Odyssey IV) inside of a dungeon, where you can put four members of your guild. While there, they form a Rescue Team and can grow stronger. If your main team dies, your Rescue Team can come help, also preventing you from losing items and money earned in the dungeon.

The official website has updated massively! Check it out here.

Some details on the town of Aslarga!

D.O.E. monsters are also bent on escaping the mystery dungeons and wreaking havoc on the town of Aslarga. To prevent them from doing so, it's vital to use parties to their full potential and make use of the fortresses made available to you.

Also of note is that the Prince/Princess class has had its name changed to Sovereign.

Here's a bit of Japanese footage, showcasing a party of a Wanderer, a Medic, a Runemaster, and a Gunner traversing a Mystery Dungeon, with a bit of character creation and town features shown toward the end:

I'm a big fan of both series, but for completely different reasons essentially, so I'm curious to see how this turns out. I can see them keeping the map mechanics of EO, which would be extremely frustrating with random dungeon layouts. It's good to see it getting a western release, as Mystery Dungeon has barely been released in the west bar a few Shiren games, and obviously the pokémon spinoffs.

...I'll be completely honest with you, I never expected anyone besides me to actually reply to this thread, so it's nice to see that someone else is excited for this game! I loved the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games from Red Rescue Team's release, and was surprised by how much I loved Etrian Odyssey when I downloaded the demos for EOU and EOIV, and then bought EOU, so I'm super excited for this.

Looking at the videos that have been posted, it seems like there might be some order to how the floors are laid out in relation to each other--with branching floor paths and such--but I can't be sure. Obviously each floor is going to be different every time, but that might be something to keep both sides of Mystery Dungeon and Etrian Odyssey happy.

Good news for European fans, or anyone else from Europe who's interested! NIS Europe will be bringing the game over for a fall 2015 release! Like elsewhere, it'll have both a physical and a download release.

During a livestream yesterday, Atlus announced a sequel, Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2!

In addition to the ten classes found in the first game, EMD2 will add five new classes: Alchemist (Etrian Odyssey), Farmer (EOIII), Buccaneer (EOIII), Monk (EOIII), and a brand-new class that translates to Samurai. The Samurai class can wield up to two swords at once, but not much else is yet known. (Incidentally, this puts EMD2 in a tie with Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold for the most classes available in an Etrian game.)

First-print copies of the game will include a 2-disc "User's Best Album," a compilation of songs from the Etrian series' entire history, with the tracks selected by fans! You can vote for what songs you'd like on the album here until April 9. (You can vote for as many songs as you'd like! It does require a Twitter account, though). There will also be a special edition of the game celebrating the Etrian series' 10th anniversary; this will include a copy of the game, the aforementioned CD, a collectors' box, and a 200-page art book.

The game will release for the Nintendo 3DS on August 31 in Japan.

You can see some gameplay footage here, as well:
