Okay, so I overheard a conversation bewteen my mum and dad and thought that it would make a good discussion thread.

Well, we've heard recently that they are making politically correct terms, i.e.: Short = Vertically Challenged. Bald = Follicularly Challenged. But then we heard you aren't allowed to sing the song 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' anymore, they've changed it to 'Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep'.

Who else thinks the new politcally correct terms are actually more offensive than the original ones?

The funniest one so far I've seen is Ugly = Cosmetically Different.

I think it is a load of bullshit in all honesty, with regards to nursery rhymes, that just takes the piss :\ what 5 year old is going to get offended by the colour of the damn sheep?

Political Correctness IMO causes more offense than the words and phrases which it is trying to get rid of.

I agree. Everyone knows that when someone calls you a pollitically correct term, they're super insulting you.

Ummm, there are black sheep, so it's not like they are OVERTLY characterizing black people (I know they are, but it's not BLATANTLY obvious to children in today's world). I have said it before: Political Correctshit is going to destroy all creative thought in America before it runs it's course.

Frankly youre asking much too much with that,
labeling and stereotyping is plain human nature
and though we are trying to limit it, we can not deny
    our base instincts.

I honestly haven't met anyone who has been offended by being called "short," or anything else along those lines. The new ways of saying it just making it seem like they're either trying to appear smart, or like they're treating it like a disease. I'm short; it's just the way I am. I'm not "challenged." There is nothing wrong with me. Just different from the average height.
Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full!
One for the master, one for the dame!
And one for the little boy who lives down the lane.
Though the concept of a 'black sheep' has gotten some connotations given to it, and it's now used to describe "the odd one out" or a "loner," I see absolutely nothing wrong with this rhyme. It has educational purposes, like teaching small children that wool comes from sheep, and introduces onomotopoeias. If anything, I think that "rainbow" sheep is worse. Not only could it suggest the gay-pride symbol, but some really gullible kids could think rainbow sheep are real. xD

Exactly...aren't there sheep with "black" wool, because these black people who are milking the whole "slavery" thing are the ones that wanted it changed or us white people, are feeling guilty.....idk

Nope, no-one asked for it changed, they just did it, because they thought it would be offensive. Me, my mum and my brother's girlfriend (Not Ollie) tried singing 'Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep', it didn't fit and then I pointed out the humourous offensive thing that what if someone was rainbow coloured skin? I think it's silly...

I agree with the gay-pride and the educational thing XD And... I thought... Rainbow sheep were real... Joke, joke XD And my mum says that, it wasn't a challenge for those people to grow! They sound disabled when you say vertically challenged.

By the way, you aren't supposed to say 'dead' anymore either, it's 'living impaired' XD Some of them are quite amusing XD

The dead is now the living impaired! O.o I'll need to remember that next time I go to a graveyard to not offend the people there. I find that all the political correct terms are so ridiculous. It made sense at first since 'black' used to be a derogatory word but making politically correct words for the short...seems more like a joke.

look. Okay no one's "milking" the slavery thing. In fact a lot of "white" people are the ones trying to change these things. Legal slavery in the U.S. is dead and gone. Some people just overreact when they hear the word "black" and they think they're talking about them.

It's not really a major issue. It's just an overreaction. *like using an atomic bomb to stop a riot*

I LMAO at this and thats really hard.It usually takes ed byrne and a baby joke to make me laugh. The Politics of the present is just ridiculous playground verbal littering to the extent it's considered to be "Acceptable".If you saw what went on in the senate or in the oreachtas of the parliement house or where ever for the full day it's no better than primary school antics.
