Today, I was wondering all of a sudden, why did Riku suddenly open the door that lead to Destiny Islands destruction? Since they were leaving the next day, why did he suddenly get the idea, "Hey, what the heck does this door do?" How did he open it anyway? Did he meet the mysterious man? WOW WOW WOW :stupid:

    SPOILERS!!

He opened the door with his keyblade. He did it out of curiosity, wanting to know if it could be another way off the island.

I dont think he met the mysterious man until Hallow Bastion.

Actually he didn't get the Keyblade until he took it from Sora.

I don't think anyone opened the door, unless there was some quote I missed. I think that when the world was being destroyed the door got weakened since it lead to the heart of the world. Once it wasn't secure enough it just opened on it's own. Now why the darkness came to begin with I don't know at all...

didnt he just say "he wasnt afraid of the darkness" during that storm, and because of that, he started to take on its power (holding out his hand to sora) and open the "door" to destiny islands and the other worlds?

That door in the secret place opened because the heartless had already taken over Destiny Island's heart, which is why it was filled with darkness when sora opened the door...(duh, xD) anyway, Im not really sure what happened since there is very little info and no cutscene, but im pretty sure that riku somehow saw the darkness coming, and let it come through instead of fighting it, because he didnt feel as though he had to...since he wasnt afraid of it. Thus, it can be said that its riku's fault...which is also why the keyblade went to sora.

I have a feeling that all along the heartless were going to take over destiny islands no matter if riku was okay with it or not, but he might have been able to save the day if he decided to stop and fight the darkness. Because sora got the keyblade late, and didnt think about going back to the secret place to lock it, all the events in kh1 took place

It's not that he didn't think about it exactly, It's that he didn't know to. It's not until Wonderland or Deep Jungle (depending on what you did first) that anything gets locked and it takes Traverse Town 2 to understand what happened at the keyholes.
