    Link ~

Thoughts? Think this is all its hailed to be?

I think the fact it has fingernails and opposable thumbs is amazing.

I am pretty excited about it to be honest, lucky *******s being the ones to have found it.

However, I have always been hesitant in taking one fossil to mean definite proof.

That being said, regardless of whether it was a glitch or not, it is a pretty fantastic discovery. I look forward to the report.

I'm actually very anxious to hear more about it.

This could possibly be the missing link, and if it is, oh my god. D:

Well the crater they discovered it in was very well preserved- they could potentially find even more controversial things there o_o

Yeah, I was worried that maybe it was just a hype at first, but I took it more seriously when I saw it was on quite a few sites.

I'm quite excited about this. It's only one fossil but I do believe that this is a discovery of great importance. I hope they'll come across more so we have confirmation. I'd love it if skeptical people would have to wave the "lack of a missing link" argument goodbye. :D

Ticks you off when you read that they didn't appreciate the value of it, doesn't it? :p

Considering it annoys me when people don't appreciate even the little finds, then yes, yes it does >>

It was found in what is a now a disused quarry and is one of the worlds richest fossil sites. The reason it has kicked up such a fuss is its age, how complete it is (you can apparently see what was in its stomach when it died, i.e. berries) and it's link to apes and humans.

I think it is pretty amazing. The young earthists will have a hard time trying to explain this away ;D

What pisses me off though is that it was in a private collection for like 20 years. IT WAS FOUND THAT LONG AGO AND WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO HEAR ABOUT IT NOW BECAUSE OF SOME RICH IDIOT'S GREED. Dirty whore >_>

This could very well be the missing link, and what a find it can be for the prehistoric community if it is. I would be very excited if it turned out to be this, but it could just as easily be a mutation from an earlier species, where humans and primates sprouted from some other genetic branch entirely.

But it was found in Frankfurt? I thought that simians originated somewhere in Africa.

Yea, I saw this through archaeology.org's news page. Pretty amazing find, IMO, if it's all it's made out to be. I mean, it sounds good, but there's a lot of research, excavations, testing, dating, etc. to be done before it'll be fully accepted as proof of anything. Still, an amazing find. Particularly the preservation. I mean, 47 million years, and the food and fur is still visible? Awesome.
    Indeed, if all pans out.

I do also like the name, honoring Darwin on the 150th anniversary of the "Origin". Nice touch, there.

Really? Why would they want to all of a sudden reveal this massive discovery to the world it's like saying.

"Oh Hai, I forgot to tell you! I think I have the missing link in my private collection at home! Wanna see it?"

Maybe whoever owned it could make money out of it by selling it? It's just gathering dust in that collection of him anyway.

That is true..but I wonder why sell it now then when they first discovered it...

Saw this in the newspaper yesterday.
It was said that it was actually found 25 years ago, but was just recently further analyzed.
If this is proof for Evolution then yay :D

    Oh right **** you

Evolutionary biologists care. Someone is going to make a career out of this thing, and any others like it that may be found. You would not believe how compartmentalized much of Anthropology is.

And despite the overwhelming evidence, many people still suffer under the delusion that some invisible cosmic being just... wished the universe into being in 6006 BC. (yay for overgeneralizations!)

    Don't forget this part!

yes, I know it's a lot more complex than that. Believe me, I know. I just wanted to wrap it up into one sentence, just for fun.

I'm actually quite surprised by this find. It seems very plausible, even the fact that it is relatively intact to an extent. I can't really say much right now, due to the fact they are still studying this fossil and such.

Also, have they confirmed it is not a hoax or a trick of chemical mutation, such as radiation? Yeah, just throwing my ideas out here.

    Unlikely migration, perhaps.

Or just a wide habitation range. Either way, this was 47 million years ago. Nothing looked the same as it does now. Possibly this thing migrated to Africa later in search of the right climate, or something similar.

    EDIT: Found a map:

That's 55 million years ago, actually, but it's not too far off, given the time scale of geology.
