I've been watching the news--A LOT and I've seen a whole lot of terrible things happening like random shootings and bank robbery. I've been wondering--are superheroes real? :/ If so--why haven't they helped society?

I wouldn't say that Super hero's as in have super natural abilities exist. But I do believe that there are people out there that are in there own ways super heroes. The type of person that would do anything to help others and not think of the consequences it might have on themselves. People who would give anything for others even if that leaves them with nothing. In my mind those are super heroes. Those who do extraordinary things and aren't noticed.

I don't believe that there are the types of heroes that can stop a bank robbery by themselves easily because that is unpractical especially if the person is armed or has hostages. There is only so much anyone can do. The police can do there best to help the situation but it can be to late and it is not safe for an ordinary person to try to stand up. Sometimes bad things happen and there is nothing we can do about it. Everyone is only human and as I stated before I don't believe there is such thing as special inhumane powers that certain people posses to help others.

I agree with Cloud. If you're looking for someone who can jump over tall buildings in a single bound, you won't be seeing them. However, if you watch closely, you'll find that there are heroes among us. Everyday someone willing to go out of their way to help someone else. Someone who's willing to take a bullet to protect someone they don't even know. Someone who's first priority is putting others first. Sometimes I start to lose faith in humanity, but then I look back on all these people and realize that no matter how corrupt this world can be, there's always going to be a diamond in the rough. There's always going to be that one person, who no matter the situation, takes it upon themselves to help out others. That, in all rights, is truly the greatest hero you'll ever find.

This is one of those childhood life lesson things. Heroes are every single person. One who takes action towards the wrong with courage and no fear can be considered a hero. Now if we could get some radioactive person to go super then maybe we could have some real super hero. However, if one finds a way, there will be many others after that will use this for evil.

The idea of superpowers aren't unjustified. The idea that there are people that are born with supernatural talents is kinda absurd. But the future could open doorways previously locked to us.

But in everyday life, the idea of a hero is in the eye of the beholder. I believe that anyone who has the morals to do what they, in their heart, believe is the right thing, than they are the heroes. But people are flawed, not everyone sticks to their moral code and tries to do what's best. People do what they see fit. Humanity is a selfish race, but they can marvelous things when the time comes. Those who live to help others, regardless of themselves, are heroes. Life just needs more people with an upstanding moral code.

You just answered your own question. They are not heroes if they haven't helped society. Also, superpowers don't exist.

Are you 100% certain of that? Anything is possible, after all. As long as our understanding of the universe is incomplete by any amount, how can we say for sure that something does not or cannot exist? How would you define a superpower? For example, my sense of taste significantly more powerful than most people's. What about a person born with extremely sensitive ears who could hear a bank robber shouting from farther away than most people? What if I had a more accurate than average ability to read people's facial expressions and determine their moods? All of those are above (the meaning of the prefix "super-") ordinary humans' abilities (one of several definitions of "powers), so couldn't those be considered superpowers, in a way?

No. First of all, the universe is governed by a set of laws. It's not like "anything is possible." Second of all, all those things you described are fairly common traits in humans. We have supertasters. There are people with more sensitive hearing, especially the blind. But you don't see Daredevils everywhere. And their hearing is not going to be to such an extent, it's still limited. And there are people who can read facial expressions. These are not "superpowers" These are rather ordinary and they don't really lend to crime-fighting much. The last one is at least used by agencies such as the FBI and CIA to train their agents into identifying people and retrieving information in missions.

But do we know with absolute certainty what all of those laws are? As long as we don't know everything about how the universe works, it's impossible to say what is or isn't possible.

Except they're not "ordinary" because they are not average. As long as something does not fit into what is average, it isn't ordinary.

I'm fairly certain those laws prevent humans from teleporting or levitating.

It doesn't make them superpowers though.

This is just silly. For one--I don't think there are actual people with extraordinary powers and what Cloud<3 said--I agree to. I think there are people out there who try to help society--not to say supeheroes but REAL people like the police [Sorry to those who hate them. Heh heh...] and the Fire Department people--known as firefighters.

As far as I know we haven' t scientifically evidenced any superpower yet. As for the moral angle :

On a side-note, his assertion that the odds for such an improbable event as his life to occur cannot be the outcome of pure coincidence was fallacious. If you throw a dice six times in a row the odds for you to end up with 125431 are exactly the same as the odds for you to end up with 111111. Asserting that 111111 is an incredible unique snowflake compared to that lowly 125431 only proves the existence of your ego/bias, not that of God.
