So this is a really dumb question, but google couldn't help me so I'mposting it.
I am BRAND NEW to graphics, I have no idea what I'm doing whatsoever.
I found out I had apparently downloaded Gimp quite some time ago, so I figure I'll give it the old college try.
Now the thing is, every tutorial I see always says the same thing a few steps in
    "Set the layer to Overlay"
My question: How the hell do I do that?
I figure it's something obvious, but I can't find an overlay setting.
    Help?

EDIT: I'm also confused on what it means to set Layer to Screen.
I set my render layer to image size, but I don't see a Layer to Screen anywehre

gimp is ok , i'm not really a fan of it though, i'm currently favouring a program called 'twisted brush' it's reallt go for drawing with and it has the distortions and effects of gimp...

Okay, well first off you would need to expose yourself to the layer dialogue. It usually opens with the whole 2.0 as a whole, but if it did not...on GIMP : Windows>Dockable Dialogues>Layers.
Now, always make new layers. Make it a habit, almost every artist works with layers. You start something new, like from brushes to smudging, you make a new layer. Once you have made the new layer, the layer dialogue will have a "Mode" which clicking "normal" will lead to a drop down. That drop down contains "Multiply", "Soft Light", and the ones you mentioned "overlay" and "screen".

If you have anymore questions, I'll be free to answer.
    I gotchu.

    That...was no help at all.
Ah. Thanks so much. The Layers Dialogue was missing, no wonder I was confused. And the new layer advice helped as well.

    You're a god
