it's just a decal! they are super cheap, only like $5-10 max i have a snow white one on my macbook pro!
Except iPads don't come usually in that color. Based on this article, it's probably a custom paint job.
That's pretty cool, but you're right, it must have been damn expensive. I guess when you have money like that, you can afford to throw it around like a ball.
