I think that there is no reason to make a calander so far in the future and thats why it stopped... but i guess we will have to wait and see what happens

The Mayans made a new calendar every time the old one ended. So if they were still a distinct civilization, they would just make a new on when this one ended.

    Nothing to worry about.

The calendar probably ended because the Mayans were too lazy to update it. 12/12/12 was probably just a milestone for them, and they were probably going to update it but they left. Oh well. Although I do think that something major might happen on that day. You never know...

Maybe a Mayan priest said that that day would be the feast day of a new god or something. Keep in mind, they didn't use the Gregorian calender.

Well the ancient civilizations were more advanced than us, not technilogy wise.
They could predict eclipses with none of the equipment we use, so obviously they knew something about the universe we probably haven't discovered yet
but i REALLY DOUBT that they could tell what was going to happen centuries later

I believe the Maya calender ends in 2012. I do NOT, however, believe that the whole world ends because of a piece of stone running out of numbers. There is not such thing as seeing the future, or prophecy. It will not happen. The world will end several billion years from now, when the sun goes nova and engulfs the earth at the end of it's lifespan.

    Lol I graduate in 2012

I don't believe in this at all though.
If I'm not mistaken, didn't this same thing happen with 2000?

Stop posting so many of these threads.
No I don't believe in this, and even if it's real,I don't think we should spend our remaining time here being nervous ****s.
Annoying people with what will happen instead of what's happening now.

Sun's not big enough to even truly go nova. I think...<< Although it will expand into a red giant. @-@ The Earth might "survive" that...but it'll be a molten mess afterwards. Simple way to put it but I'm getting off topic. >>

And yeah. The calender does end because...I think I remember hearing that it was a prediction that it was their civilization that would end by 2012 and not the world. Too bad they basically died off a lot sooner. And this type of thing happens all the time. I remember that there was a big scare back in...the 70's or 80's that the world would end because of some stupid "prophet" said it would. (Okay, technically I don't remember it since I wasn't born but I've heard of it). Then it happened in 2000...And probably a few times since then. I think even last year it was even the year the world was supposed to "end". Yeah...it's not gonna end anytime soon.

Same. xD We were all meant to be ruled by the devil in 6/6/06, yet... We're okay.

I don't think this is real, I think probably the guy just died. And think of it this way, if it does come true, no need to buy Christmas presents that year.

It's not big enough to supernova, but it'll nova, all right. It'll expand to about the orbit of Mars, and might engulf it (it might stop just short, though). Either way, Earth will melt like a snowflake in a nuclear explosion.

    Funny. I kinda thought that nova was also a bit like a wimpy version of Supernova. My bad. Well since we're on the topic of this. As the Sun expands, it loses gravitational pull. The Earth...and Mars, will move back as well. They may survive but...honestly...who wants to live in a molten world? Excluding beings of unextinguishable fire. >>;

A nova doesn't create a black hole. A supernova does. Other than that, they're pretty similar, and they both result in the extinction of just about all life (if any) in a system.

EDIT: Oh, and a supernova can be found in telescopes thousands of years after it happens.

Technically supernovas don't always do that...but yeah...the Sun's just gonna end up being a White Dwarf in the end. Expand, lose all its...well not all of it but the outer stuffs(I'm too lazy to use any terms here) and leave a core. Well...it's amazing how much fun I'm having actually talking about exploding stars. Then again, that's probably one of the most awesome things around.

EDIT: I remember that! Ah yes...the badassery of supernovas.

The Mayans were probably all killed before they could finish the rest of their calender. lol.

But seriously, people have been predicting the end of the world for many years. I think some pastor or something said that the world would end on December 25, 2008...and we're still here. =/

i would laugh if the world ended on my birthday lol.
it would be just my luck.

but seriously, if you even believe in things like this, you cannot predict it.
